Convert STL Mesh to Solid Body

I have figured out how to convert an STL mesh into BRep which works great, but all the faces are split up into a bunch of triangles. I understand I can manually merge this faces in the Patch environment. The only thing is this is a manual process that can take quite awhile depending on the model. Is there a way to merge all co-planar faces at once? I believe I could do this in DesignSpark, but I have since moved away from DesignSpark and am now using Fusion 360.

Thanks!

Hi,

I don't think that there is anything other than merge faces with chain selection on that can be faster for this

Regards.

Also you can work in the program Meshmixer and then take your file to fusion360, you can find it in Fusion 360 app store.

Thank you for the reply. I am not familiar with Meshmizer, but I will definitely check it out and hopefully it will help me do what I am looking for.

Thanks,

Justin

I downloaded and installed Meshmixer. I have also imported my model into it, but from there I'm not really sure what I am doing to try and combine all co-planar faces and export it.

Thanks, I will checkout the video soon as I get a chance. The only software I have been able to successfully merge all co-planar faces is DesignSpark. It's pretty easy in there, but unfortunately it can't output to any useful formats I don't believe. I am hoping once watching the video and learning Meshmixer a bit more that I can do what I am trying to do.

Thanks again.

If you want to merge do-Lamar faces, simply select one of them an der hit the delet key. Fusion 360 will attempt to heal the surface and in the process often merge all coplanar faces.

For prismatic objects this usually works like a charm.

Thanks for the tip! I tested this out and it worked on parts of the object, but other parts it didn't. I noticed to that it only merged the faces attached to the face I was deleting. I was looking for a way to automatically merge all co-planar faces of the entire object if possible.

Appreciate the help.

Correct. in Fusion 360 this works on some surfaces but not on others.

Don't be a prisoner of your tools and use what's best for the job!

If this is easier to do in Designspark, which is no surprise then use it. Designspark is the smaller free version of Spaceclaim.

Spaceclaim has a phenomenal set of tools aimed at reverse engineering.

Right, I just prefer Fusion 360 for most things and was hoping there was a similar method in Fusion 360. I also found that there is a Cleanup extension in SketchUp that also merges all co-planar faces on the model. The only thing about using DesignSpark and SketchUp is that I can't export to a STEP or other usable file in Fusion 360 so I am stuck working in one of those programs.

Hopefully Fusion 360 will add this feature in the future.

Thanks for the replies and help.
