Controlling the timeline

I've heard that the timeline should show only the steps of the active component. Mine is just always the entire thing, all the time, even when a lower component is activated. Do I have to turn that feature on somewhere?

Hi,

Timeline > right side > gear symbol > hide all inactive features

That only wrks if you are adhering to Fusion 360 R.U.L.E #1.
