Components on my model have dissappeared

Hi all,

I've ended up in a bit of a muddle here. I've designed a woodwork bench, during the process I selected most of the components and used the show/hide command to hide them. Aligned the vise handle with it's pivot and now I can't make the bench components show up again. I've made a screencast for you. I'm sure it's me being a muppet but all the parts are now components, they're activated, all their little lightbulbs are lit, I've tried the show/hide command, it's not the opacity set to zero, and Mr Google (who normally knows everything) hasn't come up with an answer.

Incidentally, if a component must always be activated, why aren't they activated as default?

Hi @Anonymous,

You forgot the screencast! Please attach the file as well.

Cheers / Ben

Can you share the model here?  My guess is that maybe the bodies inside the component are turned off, but it's hard to tell just from the screencast.  If we can take a look at the model, it would probably be apparent what is going on.

thanks,

Jeff

Thanks very much for taking the time look, but that doesn't explain to me why I can't re-show the components with the show/hide command again. The point indicated is where I changed from bodies to components, is this wrong? I'd had a problem with components becoming x-rayed and couldn't find the answer so gave up and used bodies. I then found that the top level part also needs to be a component and activated, et voila ca marche! I converted the bodies to components from then. But now they're hiding from me!

@Anonymous:  My suspicion was correct.  The bodies are hidden inside the components:

If you make the body visible, it will show up in the graphics area:

Hope this is clear,

Jeff

Thanks Jeff, I will look tommorow as I've just powered that PC off and it's time for bed now, I may be in a different time zone to you (France). Is it normal practice to have to have to turn on all the individual bodies inside the components too? or should those bodies be placed somewhere else, a bit like sketches.

Hi @Anonymous,

1. You MUST follow R.U.L.E #1. Every time you start working on a new part, you must create a new component and make sure to activate it, when working on it!

2. When selecting parts in the window like you did, you are actually selecting the bodies and not the components.

3. To achieve what you were trying to do, you either select the components in the browser (on the left) and then hit the "V" key (the shortcut) Or if you do that often to the same set of components, you create a "Selection Set". http://help.autodesk.com/view/fusion360/ENU/?caas=caas%2Fvideo%2Fyoutube%2Fwatch-v-r6aOoWRYWII.html

yes, I've read about RULE 1, but when I used it my model went into x-ray mode, which wasn't a lot of use. It's taken a long time, a load of videos, and eventually a video off a 3rd party website and a lot of swearing to discover that the PARENT PART, top level, must also be an activated component.

Why aren't components automatically activated?

I'm not sure what you mean about the "x-ray mode"!?

Fusion 360 gives you the control to decide which component you want to activate in order for you to work on it. The only thing you need to remember is that, a Component (container) = a Part. Everything that builds that Component must be inside that component and in order for that to happen, the Component must be activated (you are shifting the focus onto that part).

When you create a new component, the component is been activated automatically. Beside that, you have to do it yourself. You just need to get use to this new workflow and Habit.

Cheers / Ben.
