Combine two bodies not working

I do combine bodies all the time, but with this project, it isn't working. I started with two imported CAD components (pipe fittings) from McMaster-Carr, overlapped. Split them in half with the same construction plane and then combined them. That worked. Filled in the larger pipe fitting, but the one body did not join. Then created a cone with a loft cutting through the fill in body. Tried to combine the two bodies. It will rename one of the bodies, but they will not join. Tried the suggestion of stitching, but I could not select the surfaces. Figuring there was a gap, created a circle 1mm larger, extruded, which joined with the filled in area. Tried again to combine. No joy. This is my 2nd little project with the McMaster-Carr repository, and it is cool. This is probably something simple, but I cannot see it. Please 🙂 Help!

Your processes were just a little untidy. Section analysis your model for overlaps and gaps, zoom in.

The loft cut, large diameter was sketched and had a projected edge in that sketch, used the projected edge in the edit.

The depth of the filling insert does not reach the shoulder, when entering the parameter, I edited that by extrude to object > Join, and then the Loft cut.  Don't need the last Combine.

Might not suit your workflow, but worked for me.

Might help....

Wow. Thank you. I had not looked or even known about the Inspect menu. Major oversight and thank you for pointing out a whole new set of toys to play with and debug problems.
