Cheapest laptop that can run Fusion ?

hey everyone ...

 

my old Macbook cannot run Fusion anymore but i need a laptop to be able to generate G-Code offsite since i will be using a workspace in a fabrication lab quite far away from my home base. I don't really have the need for a powerful laptop anymore for anything else and only have a tiny budget for this so i'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a cheap laptop that can run Fusion just for generating/adjusting Gcodes if i need to.

 

I won't be doing any modeling or rendering on this machine and do most of the manufacturing prep on my Desktop at home, but probably will have to adjust my Gcodes a bit at the manufacturing lab.

 

For sure i don't have the budget to buy a Mac and there are so many Windows models out there that i'm a bit lost. 8Gb of RAM and a 4 or 8 core CPU shouldn't be too expensive nowadays but i'm wondering about the GPU i should aim for. System requirements state that i need a dedicated GPU so i guess even the newer generation HD graphics won't do?

So what kind of GPU should i aim for ?

What sort of toolpaths are you using? Generating toolpaths can use more resources than design! If you generate a large 3d toolpath Fusion will use all your cores and all the GHz your CPU can provide. On the specs page for Fusion it does say you can use the integrated cards but they can dynamically allocate upto 50% of your memory. Again toolpath generation can need more memory than design so I'd say 16Gb minimum. So really you have it a bit backwards, CAM can need a more powerful computer than design.

 

To help with graphics if you go for integrated turn off all the effects, I turn these off anyway as I never add appearances and just find the effects distracting.

ah thx Mark ... seems like i indeed have it backwards, wasn't thinking about the CPU load of generating toolpaths and got hung up on the 'Dedicated GPU' and didn't read the nex line in the specs that mentions integrated graphics 😂

 

i do indeed mainly use 3d toolpaths and sure enough, even on my desktop it can take quite a long time to generate. SO you're rigth, probably a fairly recent CPU with lots of cores and lots of RAM is what i should be looking for instead of a laptop with dedicated GPU.

 

So i'm wondering if sth like this would do the job: https://www.lenovo.com/de/de/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadl/l14-amd-g2/20x500b4ge ... AMD cpus seem to offer more bang for the buck than Intel

I've been helping someone with the same GPU here. Fusion was complaining about the GPU, “This computer graphics driver or hardware may be limiting performance”. Setting the minimum memory allocated to the card in the BIOS got rid of the error but not sure about performance. Might be worth asking in that thread.

 

I notice on the specs the base frequency is 2.3GHz with a boost to 4.2GHz. I seem to remember there being a limit on threads if at max boost for some CPUs, think there's a setting to work around that. You might want to research a bit on this as high clock speed is going to be important.

ah yes that is indeed sth i hadn't thought of, i have little experience with AMD cpu's ...

 

so i guess i should go for the highest base clock speed i can find and make sure the GPU part of the cpu is as recent and powerfull as possible. i?m scanning through gamer forums and site now to get an overview of what's available.

 

would the number of cores/threads make a big difference .. so is it worth looking for a higher core count or is base clock frequency the most important ?

Not sure how much of a problem the lower clock speed will be when all cores are in use. If you have task manager running when you generate a program you normally get one thread work for a few seconds then all cores but then it goes back to one core again. So if the high clock speed helps with the start and end of the calculation and all cores with the middle part it might actually work well. Think good ventilation will help so you might want a laptop cool pad as well.

 

Do you use the the In Process Stock option? I find it takes too long when working on 3d parts but it does look like it does use all cores as well.

so i've been playin around a bit on my 6core/12thread core i7-8700 with generating toolpaths to see how the cores are used. Have to do a comparison on windows but at least on mac the multi cores and multithreading are pretty well used for toolpath calculations but overall compared to rendering none of the cores/threads are working full steam. did a ridiculous adpative clearing operation on a large complex 3d object with stupid small stepdown and no rest machining (machining this would have been 13h machine time 😂) for analysis.

 

In the beginning before the toolpaths start drawing this is how it looks:

and it fizzles out a bit after that when most of the toolpaths are displayed:

when rendering the same object however it's full steam ahead on all pipes:

i think the GPU activity monitor can't be trusted since it's a hackintosh and this particular graphics card is not really supported.

 

so i guess the graphics card question (iGPU or discrete graphics card) is only partly relevant and hopefully the newer gen cpus built in graphics will all be able to at least run Fusion (since i won't be modeling or rendering at all on the laptop but only pan around the model a bit).

 

I forgot to run some test of simulating which would be usefull on site as well, but i think i'll switch to Windows to do these tests again ehich will be more relevant.

A good test for core utilisation would be create a setup with roughing and finishing ops and regen all the ops in the setup. Don't use rest machining because Fusion will wait for previous ops to finish.

 

When you say test simulation do you mean in manufacturing? Sim seems to be mostly CPU, very low GPU.

 

Do you work with appearances and all the visuail bells and whistles enabled? I don't like working with any of that, just press Ctrl+N for colour cycling and everything turned off. Just testing on an old PC with a NVidia GTX 660 with a fairly big assembly (for me) and don't see more than 20%  most of the time. If I zoom in so the model takes up the whole screen it gets upto 50% but you don't tend to work like that. Weird thing is while moving the model around the CPU jumps to max boost!

ok, so after a lot of digging and comparing benchmarks i decided to go with the cheapest laptop i could find from a reputable brand that has a dedicated GPU and a processor that is comparable to my current desktop cpu (i7-8700K). Turned out to be an Asus Vivobook Pro 15" with an i5-11300H (Q1 2021) which according to benchmarks is slightly faster in single core speed but a tiny bit slower in mutlicore speed than the i7-8700 (Q6 2017) but probably will be slower due to other factors like memory latency, bus speed and such. The GPU is an Nvidia GTX1650 Max-Q (4GB Vram). The laptop has only 8Gb Ram but can be upgraded to 16 which i'll probably do. A lot of the cheaper laptops have soldered 8GB RAM that can't be upgraded and the 16GB versions are 300 bucks or so more.

 

Not the greatest specs and GPU but hopefully it'll do for onsite adjustment of toolpaths and some simulation. It's also pretty light and doesn't have any teeny gamer stuff i don't need like 144Mhz display and RGB LED's all over the place. I paid 500€ new for it ... anything with an i7 or a better GPU would've been more than a thousand bucks which i didn't wanna spend. I was tempted to go with a latest generation i7 or i9 processors with only integrated graphics but in the end didn't wanna risk the integrated graphics.

 

I'll get it next week and will report back when i've tested it out with Fusion. Many thx again Mark for your help !

alright so i got the Vivobook K3500P today.

 

Good news is it runs Fusion really well, even big assemblies load pan and zoom snappily, pretty comparable to my desktop with the i7-8700K and AMD RTX 6600. Generating toolpaths goes smoothly and i don´t see a lot of speed difference to my Desktop. Even simulation of toolpaths runs pretty well and rendering is surprisingly fast. When the fans come on it´s not annoying at all. So it looks like a winner on first impressions, at least for what i want to do with it.

 

There are a couple of downsides of course:

 

  • It´s not a mac and Win 11 still sucks, took me hours to get rid of all the spam content, apps and suggestions and force it to work in english and not always switch the keyboard and apps to German
  • The RAM, contrary to what i thought, is soldered and not upgradeable so i´m stuck with 8Gb which sucks big time since the OS already fills up 65% of the RAM .. but it looks as if that´s not an issue for what i want to do with it in Fusion (generating and simulating toolpaths)
  • The display is glossy .. i never understood why people seem to like glossy displays, i constantly see the room and my face reflected when i´m working which is super distracting .. other than that the OLED display quality is pretty good

but beggars and choosers and all that i have to say that for 500€ brand new i really can´t complain.

 

i´ll update this thread in a while when i´ve actually worked on Fusion in a real world scenario.

I've never understood this either, same with TVs! Looks good when they're switch off, useless when using them. Probably for people who buy speakers based on what they look like rather than how they sound.🙄

so after a couple of weeks with the Asus Vivobook Pro 15" K3500P with 8GB RAM, Intel i5-11300H and Nvidia GTX1650 Max-Q (4GB) I just wanted to update my impressions.

 

For running Fusion on the go this is really a very good and cheap solution. Everything is really snappy and i can't see a real difference to my desktop in speed for modeling, rendering and generating toolpaths and toolpath sims. From a graphics poi9nt of view, i haven't even turned off the effects and am using drop shadows anti aliasing and co without any significant speed impact.

 

Still absolutely hate the glossy screen, it just doesn't work in any lighting situation and you always see your reflection. The FullHD resolution is also pretty crap for Fusion since you can't reduce the size of the icons/interface (hello Fusion team: can we please have adjustable icon size so you can see more than 3 icons per category???). In the design workspace you can't use pinned tools because of the limited space so the workflow is a bit tedious just getting to the tools. In the manufacturing workspace the popup panels for creating toolpaths are all too big and you have to shift and resize the windows a lot just to get to the OK button.

 

The keyboard is quite good to type on but the lettering is printed dark grey on light grey which makes it almost impossible to read in dim light. the keyboard light doesn't help much since when it's dimmed it makes readability even worse since the dark grey now becomes the same color as the keys. on full power the keyboard light is still to dim ... so working in bad lighting situations is not so cool when you have to see/use the keyboard.

 

Also not a fan of Win11 and the bloatware from Asus and Co has me constantly need to turn off and remove stuff that pops up as notification to 'help me get a better/safer experience'.

 

but all in all for 500€ it's a definitve buy recommendation for using Fusion.
