Change Dimensions of a Sketch

Anonymous
Not applicable

My experience of Fusion 360 so far is pretty frustrating. I'm not really finding anything very intuitive.

At the moment all I want to do is the most basic thing, which is to change the dimensions of a sketch. It's a simple rectangle that I extruded.

If a software is well designed, this should be really easy and very intuitive. But it's not.

Can anyone help me?Screen Shot 2018-03-19 at 21.27.08.png

What happens if you Edit the Sketch?

Or

Turn on the Visibility of the Sketch Dimensions?

In Timeline mode, you can directly edit sketch dimensions and user parameters in the Modify|Change Parameters dialog.  It appears that you are working in Direct Modeling mode, so that option isn't available.

I found out how to do this at last. Edit your sketch, then click the Sketch drop down menu and click Sketch Dimension, then click on the dimension line you want to edit, move the mouse to show the dimension and click again to fix it to the sketch. You can now change the dimension to what you want. Dimension measurements will stay there if you come out and go back in the sketch but you can click and delete them if you don't want them in the future.

You can change how the dimension is changed by right clicking on the little dots on the sketch and selecting Pin/Unpin and then the scaling will be relative to that point.

Under the new UI this option is located somewhere else but the Sketch Dimension option is still there.

Anyone that's done the basic tutorials and how tos should know how to edit a sketch. That said the sketch in the first post looks like it has 3 projected points in it so one or two of those would need to be deleted before it can be edited. But again it's in the help.

Hi,

Try moving the cursor in the timeline (several times) between the end and the beginning and/or jumping back and forth between the elements in the browser.
The editing mode should then be available again.

Edit. Deleted what I thought to start with.

Think this might be you have a sketch created before history was enabled so it's in a base feature like this. Still not quite the same dialog though. Can you show  the timeline and\or share the design.

This doesn't work in the new UI. It would be REALLY Nice if instead of you experts being super snark if you could right click on an object see an edit link and edit the dimensions.

Clicking on an object highlights it in the Browser and in the Timeline.  A particular object may have hundreds of dimensions associated with it.  How is Fusion going to know which one you want to edit?

Toggling on 'Show Sketch Dimensions' allows you to edit dimensions in that sketch without activating and editing the sketch.

The Change Parameters dialog lets you edit all dimensions as well as other parameters.

so where is the setting to toggle on dimensions? I keep seeing people say
you can right click and edit sketch, this turns off the sketch that I am
trying to edit?

Right click on any inactive sketch in the Browser.  Select 'Show Dimensions' in the context menu.  The command is not available in a sketch being edited.

Now it is. The Sketches seem to be turned off with no logic, once I extrude and create the objects. Is there a way to title the Sketch, like you can for an Object. Otherwise I have to go thru 30 sketches to find the correct one?

I find the timeline absolutely useless as you have to manually scroll thru each event to see which timeline object relates to a sketch or object.

I am not a novice to 3D modeling, I have been using Sketchup for years but it was suggested by a young industrial designer that I try Fusion360. I also have a degree in Computer Science from Columbi University and have design and executed enterprise software for over 15 years 🙂

you can deselect this in your preferences-

laughingcreek_0-1736119951705.png

fusion still has a maddening tendency to revert viability of objects back to the state they where before you start a tool if you change visibility of things while a tool is active.  AD seems to like this behavior so  wouldn't look for that to change anytime soon.

right-click sketch and select rename-

the timeline will become unwieldy if you don't actively manage it.  You will find that good modeling practice in fusion are very different from those of SketchUp.  for instance for the design that is visible in the pic you posted, there shouldn't be a single move.   also, allowing the yellow errors to stay in your timeline can cause all sorts of havoc to a model.  those should be addressed and fixed as they occur.
