Cant' find a way to join one comp with a second to achieve specific positioning

Hi,

 

I'm trying to join a first component with a second one, and with this join I also want to achieve specific positioning of the second component against the third component.

 

Sounds weird and you can't get the idea ? )

Because of this I decided to record a video explaining what I want, I hope this will make things clear.

I'm too impatient to wait for the file to download.Smiley Sad It's much better to export the file as an Archive *.f3d and attach that to the thread.

In any case, instead of using the first joint to place the cover in position, use the Align tool.  Now you can add the As Built joint between the cover and the hinge.  Delete the Move from the Timeline.

Sorry, use the Move command instead of the Align command.  The Move command can be removed after the rigid joint to the hinge is created.

Method #1:

 

1. Rigid Joint the cover into place as you had already done.

2. Take measurements X and Y measurements between some corner of the appropriate hinge's face and a nearby corner of the cover's face.

3. Undo/delete the Rigid Joint created in step #1.

4. Create a Rigid Joint between the corner of the hinge you measured from and the corner of the cover you measured to. The cover should move up to the hinge, but of course it will not be located properly over the box.

5. While the Joint dialog box is still open, enter the measured values into the appropriate Offset fields. This should get your cover located correctly centered on top of the box as desired.

 

 

Method 2: (This method assumes the sketch will move with the cover component when you delete the first Joint. I haven't tried it. It might not work as I'm imagining. I just brainstormed it up as something you could try.)

 

1.  Rigid Joint the cover into place as you had already done.

2. Make sure the cover component is active.

3. Make a new Sketch on the hinge-side face of the cover.

4. Project into that Sketch the hinge's screw holes.

5. Finish the sketch.

6. Delete the Rigid Joint made in step #1.

7. Rigid Joint the cover to the hinge using the center point of a projected hole in that Sketch to the appropriate center point of a hinge hole.

 

(This method assumes the sketch will move with the cover component when you delete the first Joint. I haven't tried it. It might not work as I'm imagining. I just brainstormed it up as something you could try. If it doesn't work, you may instead have to make the sketch on the rear of the cover while it's in its original location, and manually place points in the appropriate positions with dimensions from a corner reflecting the appropriate place that will match up with the hinge holes.)

I tried Move command, it's not working, as well as the Align tool (they have the same result)/

the first method is straight-forward, I was thinking on this also, and I don't like this because it makes hard assessments of the distance between hinge and cover. It means each time I change size of the printer body (which affect cover as well) I'd have to change this join.

 

The second method is interesting, but I think it won't work because the step 4 ("Project into that Sketch the hinge's screw holes") will make a different projection on cover after removing join on step 6.

 

I'm thinking of having a tool which joins two objects (exactly like "as-built-join" does) and which allows me to specify position of the first object relative to some 3rd object.

Maybe this can be a new tool the Fusion team can introduce.

If you parameterize the width of the box and the cover, as well as the distance of the hinges from the box center or from the sides, then it is easy to also make a parameter to control the X Offset value (or whichever one is appropriate) which is based on some formula that relates to the other parameters.
