Can't use a "closed" 3d surface for a loft or an extrusion.

I am trying to create a raised 6 pointed wavy star. (See the straight 5 sided star for comparison.)

I can't select the elements of the wavy ridge described in the 3d sketch so the loft cannot complete. What is the best way to complete my model?

Will be 2 Patch Lofts, before a 6 x Circular pattern, then work to make solid..

 

Divide the job into smaller segments, for this leg a top and bottom inclined face.

First the highlighted curves need a height / lift at the centre point of the star. 

Same as the straight vertical line in the five pointer.

Then it is a Loft to point, from 1 to 2, with 3 and 4 as rails.  Same for the top.

Then the arms can be patterned, stitched and boundary fill will make the solid.

 

Will need the file for closer look at the 3d sketches.

Just quick update, 

 

Loft was not working due to the curved wave, making for a fold under, so went with Patch > Patch, with no need for the point number 2, as above.

Hi,

Here's a simple solution.

star loftedstar lofted
Whether it meets your requirements is up to you.
The endpoint of the loft can be varied between sharp and tangential and the profile can be changed by moving the spline points.

@g-andresen  that is a fantastic method. But, why didn't you just build it on the Origin instead of making a separate axis?

Hi Chris,

This could not be done differently because the cursor refused to start at the origin again.
Such it is in live sometimes.

Do you mean that clicking on the Origin did not automatically snap a Coincident restraint into place? That's weird, sure, but you could still manually add it after you place your first line/spline/whatever.
