Can't shell or split or combine

Hello.  I am having a lot of trouble finding a solution to my problem.  I have shared a drawing at https://a360.co/2LiOdZq.  It is a casting for a mold.  It's hollow on the top but solid on the bottom.... filled in.  I want to shell the bottom.  I'm pretty flexible but haven't found any approaches that actually work.  Every one of them hits an error and Fusion just fails.

Attempts I've made, where Fusion has failed.

  1. Simply use the shell feature to shell the bottom face to a 2mm remaining thickness.  F360 fails with error.
  2. Use an existing face matching the bottom of the inside of the mold to cut the body of the mold 2mm lower than the surface of the inside bottom of the mold.  F360 fails to do the cut with an error.
  3. Use another body that is the shape of the part to be shelled out and do a combine/cut to do the shelling.  Cut works but leaves gaps.  Both Press/Pull and Loft fail with errors when attempting to close the gaps.

Sometimes it is so frustrating to deal with F360 because the features simply result in errors... the dreaded red circle X.  It seems any time I am trying to use time saving features (like shell or press pull, cut) with complex shapes.

Any other ideas would be appreciated or confirmation that there is a bug here.

Thanks for any help all.

It's likely a model, not a drawing.

Can you create link to your model from the data panel or export it as a .f3d from and attach it to your next post ?

There are extra characters at the end of the link above. A quick copy paste gives https://a360.co/2LiOdZq

I'm not 100% clear what operation you want to do.  Here is the model in the state I just downloaded.  Do you want to shell this body, removing the selected face?

If so, that is never going to work.  If you look at the section view, you can see why:

Those very thin areas on the left and right are also part of this body.  Shelling those is going to require a very thin (impractically so) shell distance to have any hope of succeeding.  I suspect that you really want to "shell" only the thicker parts of this body.  Is that correct?  If so, then the modeling techniques will be more complex, because the geometry is not segregated the way I assume you want it.

That makes sense Jeff.  I was overlooking that fact.... the walls being part of the same body and needing to be shelled as well, which of course I don't want.  I just want to shell the lower part.  Really I'd be most happy to just chop off the entire lower solid section, leaving effectively a shaped bowl including the walls and the surface at the inside bottom of the bowl.  The entire thing the thickness of the walls.  I'll give that a try by using the lone surface in the file that was used to split the mold early on and see if I can use it to split that solid part off just under the bottom surface of the bowl.  The end goal is to have a casting mold for a plaster part.
