Can't offset this curved surface ?

Hello,

I'm reworking a design that was originally done with Rhino.

One of the surfaces is giving me headaches, as I need to thicken it, but can't seem to succeed. Other shapes from the same source worked fine, but this one not : I always get the "Selected faces could not be offset" error message.

Any idea why this would happen ?

[EDIT] I've continued my investigations, and found that the problem is located near the flat end of the shape. If I cut out with a vertical plan a section of the front, the remainder of the shape does offset. I still don't understand why the whole shape can't be offset[/EDIT]

Your help is appreciated.

offset and thicken is pretty sensitive to surface quality.  You can see in the pic that the surface a little funky near the corner.  (I put a curvature comb on the edge and curvature map on the surface). It's got a  pretty high curvature, and the edge doesn't have a smooth curvature comb, which means in mathematical terms there will be a bit of a crease there, even though you can't see it.  fusion doesn't deal with that kind of thing very well.

rhino is capable of creating very good quality surfaces, so whoever made the original model probably just wasn't paying attention on that part.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. I still have a lot to learn about this whole subject of splines, surface generation, curvature etc..., so your explanations point me in the right direction.

Do you think that I should be able to fix this problematic area of the shape within Fusion 360, or would this require a rework under Rhino ? (I'm going to pull someone's ears when I see him 😉
