Can't offset ( sketch or model ) - initially imported from DXF

After importing the DXF file I received from a client, I started to make a 3D model from it, to be able to make some toolpaths and to try to mill this part in steel.

 

I have attached also some photos to see what I'm trying to make as the 3D model, and where I have the offset problem.

It's about the Key shape lines in the midle of the model, that in the finished product needs to be a sharp blade, so the key shape line you see in the sketch is the exact center of the blade, I tried to offset to the exterior , 1.5mm, but it doesn't matter the value, I can't offset those lines no matter what

 

I wanted to make 2 offsets of that line, one on the interior, very small, just 0.5mm and one on the exterior which will be 1.5mm, after that I though to make a kind of chamfer to make the model sharp.

 

PS. Attached is the model I made from the DXF file I imported to fusion.

Hi @ovisopa,

 

I was noticing some odd behavior with your model that I will bring up with the team - but it seems that any command I chose (i.e. offset), I had to first click in the workspace after selecting offset and then it would become active and would register the line I was hovering over. When I tried that, it seemed that the geometry was not closed however and only grabbed 3/4 of the lines for the key shape. Therefore, I had to go back to the original sketch and extend all the lines to ensure it was a closed loop - then using breaks I closed off the lines and deleted the excess. I then went back to the new sketch, projected the geometry into the active sketch plane (the key outline) and offset the projection successfully (again I had to click into the active workspace first though).

PS. I also noticed after many tries that weird offset you show in your video at 0:17 but I waited for an reply because I though I was doing something wrong.

Hi @ovisopa,

 

No worries! Let me know if that worked for you. I think the key (pun intended Smiley Tongue) is to click first then use the command. It shouldn't operate that way - but for some reason on your model it seems that is the workaround necessary. I'll report this to the team.

Edit your original sketch and enable Show Points, any points on a profile are likely to be a problem as they show open ends.

Thank you guys for your replies, I almost finished my first model, I have to change the draft angle of the exterior part as it came out a 20 degree angle, but I don't have a 20 degree endmill to be able to mill it, the interior one it's 30 degree, that should be good.

 

When I made the interior Draft I created a new Offset plane from top, the value was random.. I think -0.3mm and than used the command Project -> Intersect to cut the interior face at that level, and draft only from there on ... but is there a better way to do that draft ? I mean if I know I will have a 60 degree endmill, I will need the draft at that angle, but I don't know at what level I should make the offset plane to intersect the face, to get a 60 degree angle on that face ... so should I get back and learn again some simple geometry formulas to find that distance, or there is a different method to make that faces at exactly what angle I want ?

You could try Chamfer for the inner draft, set to Angle and Distance for the chamfer type. Unfortunately there's no option the change the direction\face for the distance option.Smiley Frustrated For some reason this is a problem in quite a few CAD programs, don't know why the developers can't see the problem. First use the measure tool the find the width of the flat then if you're lucky the distance option will be the correct way and you can enter the size you measured.
