Can't Move Sketch

Hi. I'm attempting to move my X-Y plane sketch downward on the Y-axis so that the top of the sketch is repositioned at Y = 0. The Move/Copy command will let me pivot my sketch about the origin, but it will not let me move the entire sketch down.

Reading some prior forum posts convinced me to make sure I'd deleted any coincident constraints on the origin and to try the Align command instead of the Move/Copy command, but doing so still didn't solve my problem.

I suspect there's a very simple solution to my problem, but I'm not seeing it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! - guy

Can not you create a new sketch and do a project?

Yes, I can create a new sketch and do a project. I'm attempting to understand why I can't move a sketch... I can only pivot the sketch about the origin.

Hi,

My guess is that you didn't delete all the constraints, because they might be invisible

please attach your file here ... go to file > export > .f3d and attach it to your next post

And a screencast it may be that you are useing the wrong move command or the constraint is still there

Sounds like you have a coincident constraint at the origin. Screencast shows the problem and how to fix. Note when I mouse over the constraint icons one highlights the 2 lines the other is the one to delete, highlighting the origin point and the corner point..

Most likely, it's because you snapped a point to the sketch origin, which is always a fixed point.  Especially if you can rotate around this point.

You need to delete the coincident constraint to this point in order to move it.

Thanks very much, Jeff. You and Mark were correct. I had a coincident constraint at the origin that I'd failed to notice... despite the fact that was sitting there the whole time.

I appreciate you guys bailing me out - and for the education.

Sorry to resurrect the thread. I am having problems moving a sketch. One half is moveable while the other half stuck! Can't see what went wrong could you help?

looks like the same problem described above.  the left side is constrained to the origin.

what is the end goal of moving the sketch?

The screen capture didn't show the part I deleted the constrain. The weird thing is after I deleted the constrain I could move the right half of the ellipse but not the left. both sides can be rotated on the centre lines though. If the ellipse is constrained to the origin it shouldn't be able to rotate on its axis.

To get around this issue I have tried just moving the right half of the ellipse to the location I want and do a mirror of the sketch but guess what mirroring can't be done too.

Can you File>Export your *.f3d file to your local drive and then Attach it here to a Reply?

You should fully define the geometry (other than position) and can then "move" wherever needed.

I hesitate to use the word move, as in generally you should not need to Move sketch geometry.

What is your true Design Intent?

(It would have been best to start a new thread and link back to this Solved thread as reference.)

A side note...

The odds that you got a 37-point spline - an unconstrained one at that - to accurately, mathematically represent an ellipse is incredibly low.

Hi I want to create a wing that tapers from one profile to another. I have tried doing a sketch of a wing profile at the origin and create an offset plane for the other profile but I can't get the sketch to align correctly with the origin plane. I could eyeball it but that just feels wrong from an engineering standpoint. So I created two sketches on the origin plane and move one of the sketches to another location and Fusion 360 throwing up all these weird behaviors.

Thank you so much for all your help, really appreciate it!

The points are defined using an equation and excel, if more accuracy is needed I could create more points but I feel it is good enough for my needs without sacrificing performance.

Examine the Attached file My Curve sketch.

Then turn on the visibility of your Sketch6.

With very very little effort I nearly recreated your curve with only TWO Points.

It is a common misconception that more points equates to a better curve.

There are a huge number of other foundational considerations in first learning the basics of modeling that I am going to drop out of this discussion, but an airfoil is probably not a beginner project... ...even though I see a lot of students attempt this as their first project.

Edit: BTW - if you are Moving sketches - you are almost certainly doing something wrong.

Investigate Workplanes (Construct) and Project (Geometry).

I'm sure it's very accurate. Still not as accurate as just using the Ellipse tool.

How do I know the eccentricity if I an using the ellipse tool?

Anyway my trouble is with the sketch not able to move but no one seems to know why.
