Can't get local files to open.

I'm trying to open some locally stored Inventor and STP files in the September release of Fusion 360 and I can't.  When I try to open them, I get the following error message "Opening of local files is not supported!".  How do I get around this?

You can upload those files to your project firstly and then you would be able to open them.

The upload failed two times for some reason (9Mb, wrl file). What to do? Is there a way to open files that were created somewhere else without uploading them? (What if I don't have internet at the time...).

Hi Vasily,

In offline mode you're able to create new files.  To open existing files though not already stored in offline mode you'll need to hook up to the internet to load.  The reason is Fusion's cloud translators are cloud based.  You need to be hooked up to the internet to access them.

What's the file format you're trying to upload?  Can you share the error message?

How do you "upload" files that you haven't opened yet?

All files are uploaded thru the upload command in the data panel.  Are you looking for something specific?  What are you trying to upload?

Quick question. So I am to understand that if I created a file in the office in online mode, I cannot acces that file while traveling or disconnected from the internet in offline mode, even if I exported it as a .f3d file?? Am I right? If this is the case, is this something that will be addressed in future updates? Thank you!

Hi Mike,

if you created a design on your office machine while connected with Fusion 360 and assuming your office machine is a laptop, then you will be able to access that design while traveling and offline or disconnected from the internet.
Fusion will remember designs you're actively working on when connected or online for offline use when you are disconnected as long as you are offline on the same machine. If you want to work offline on a different machine you'll need to first, open the design you want to work on while online, then go offline to have access. Any changes you save while offline will automatically update to the original design as a new version in the cloud once you reconnect.

There isn't any way to open an F3D archive from Fusion while offline. We are currently working on an enhancement to our offline experience to clarify for users how offline works.

hope this helps.

"We are currently working on an enhancement to our offline experience to clarify for users how offline works."

?!?! What does that even mean? The way I read it, they're working 'round the clock to create a satisfactory popup message informing paid users that they don't own their files and can't open any files they do own unless they place them under the (convenient) cloud control of Fusion360 authors.

Lucky we discovered this obscene limitation the same day we paid for subscription for our company. Essentially, we don't own anything we create with Fusion360.

Do you think this is much different with Adobe?

Fact is the files are synced and manages online. Yes bad but well thats the way it is.

However you can export files as well.

But I do agree while I like the cloud collaboration the cannot load or import local is just plain @#$!&^% !!!

And when there is no internet then how you will upload?  Also why a program cannot open directly what it has created?  😞 😞 Plus, it is really really weird that people are asking questions on how to open local files for a "save capable" software, emberassing and ridiculous. Isnt it the first thing developers MUST handle?

1-Give freedom to save/load locally

2-Cloud saving it is the people's choice, DO NOT make it a MUST at the first place!

3-This is the first software i have ever seen with this kind of save / load file puzzle 😞
