can i create a flat box/plate with generative design? i could place that plate onto 4 legs and see if it is strong.

why i want a table/plate to not be solid? saving filament and time and not priting the whole thing as a solid block, but just enough to withstand a specific weight. 

sure i could just print the walls and the top layer as solid and then 10% infill or so. but i think this isnt efficient.

You can create legs with Generative design by considering suitable loads and conditions. But make sure of the preserve region and obstacles to mount your plate/box on generative design model.

If you want the desired shape to be printed. You shall try creating starting shape for your plate. The starting shape can be of string type or any preferred shape that you have kept in mind.
