Both Pan and Orbit are intermittent

Quite often when I try to either orbit or pan, I will get the appropriate orbit/pan symbol on the screen, and the task bar will also highlight to indicate that particular mode is active, yet nothing happens. ie it doesn't pan or orbit. I need to click on some other function and go back to trying to orbit/pan for it to work. This happens quite frequently and I wonder what I'm doing wrong here?

Are you using a mouse or the trackpad?

Could you provide a little more information on this issue? If you get a chance, a screencast may be helpful.

You can download screencast from the below webpage.

When you say the task bar, do you mean the navigation bar? See the image below.

I just want to make sure we are comparing apples to apples.

You may try to see if there is a conflict with another application or piece of hardware on the machine. For example a space mouse, or a tablet, or Mouse without borders (I use this program). You might even test another mouse.

Are you using a logitech mouse with the extra button next to the wheel or a magic mouse?

Thanks,

Thanks guys, I'm currently using a magic mouse with Magicprefs for the third button function. I will look for an alternative mouse as I don't particularly like this mouse for this type of work (any recommendations?)

Everything else on the machine (new iMac in this case, new Macbook Pro in the other) is standard Apple hardware. Other than Parallels and Dropbox, I don't have any software installed that I could imagine would be messing around too much in the background, and parallels is only used as required (ie rarely).

Yes sorry for the confusion, I'm from the long forgotten world of paper, it's the Navigation bar you provided a screen shot of. Your's is showing contrained orbit, normally mine will be free orbit, it will change from grey to blue, the "select" tab will change from blue to grey,  and the cursor will change to the free orbit symbol. The cursor will move around the screen yet nothing happens. I can change to Pan with identical results. I could just get it to do it staright from first start with no project loaded, and one thing I noted was the orange dot will be left under the cursor when it changes back from orbit to normal, with the orange dot disappearing after a second or so. When the orbit is operating normally, the orange dot is, I believe, fixed in space. There is no similar dot in pan so I can't compare, but otherwise my comments are equally applicable to both.

i really like the Logitech mx
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/anywhere-mouse-mx?crid=7
only thing is the middle mouse needs to be set on the button behind the scroll wheel, pushing the scroll wheel enables/disable scroll indexing. I got use to it really fast though, I really like the weight of the mouse and the usb antenna is really low profile.
hope this helps,

I have been experiencing this same issue. It is really frustrating!!

I am using a Logitech mouse, model M510, on an iMac. It has a mouse scroll wheel combination button. I have smoothMouse installed too, cuz mouse track speed is abysmal.

I can see the Select / Pan icon highlighted below, and the cursor turns into the directional hand (pan) type, but when I drag the mouse, nothing happens.  I have to click, sometimes several times, away from the model, in order for the pan to function.

I recently have found that if I press + hold the middle mouse button for a second, before moving the mouse, sometimes it will work better.
