BOM - Components naming

Hey everyone,

I'm having a problem with components naming.

I've been using Fusion360's Manufacture workspace and for one of the projects, i have to create a production sheet with a variety of parts on it and cut it later on a Router CNC, as shown in the picture below. Naming_Fusion360.png

After positioning the components through "Move->Create Copy" I tried to make a drawing with the parts that are produced from the initial sheet, but I did not see that they were considered a body and not a component, so i used the option "Create components from bodies" and a long list of components have been created.

So, I've been trying to rename these components so they could appear as one in my BOM table, but I can't find how to link the names of the equal components in order to their quantities add up. I have the original file that is named, for instance, "porta-damper-inferior:1" and after I rename the copy of that component to "porta-damper-inferior" it won't add up to the quantity of the original part.

Is there a solution for this kind of problem?

Thank you,

Marco Passos

Identical Components will show up in the drawing Parts List as a single entry with a counted quantity.  So if I had a component called ABC and I Copy/Paste it in the assembly, the parts list will show one entry with a quantity of 2.  If I Copy/Paste New in the assembly, the parts list will show two entries with a quantity of one each.  In the first case the components are identical and linked to each other.  In the second case, the components are independent and not linked together.  This should give you an idea how you have to construct your assembly to get a single entry/counted parts list.  Attach your model so we can see what you have and give more help.  If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section of a forum post to attach it.

Hey, John! Thank you for your reply (:

I used the "Move/Copy" as shown below to copy every part, that's why I can't understand why the new parts don't have its name linked with the original one, since in every other document it worked very well. Never used "Copy" and "Paste"/"Paste New".

I was wondering if I could rename the components and link them to the original. At this point it would be faster to just copy the components properly, but still, I'd like to now if there is a way to solve it without erasing everything that I did.

Anyway, here is the model for you to take a look.

Is there a particular reason you are working on a model without a timeline?

No particular reason, I'm yet trying to understand how fusion works since it's not the only CAD software the company uses.

First of all, the Copy you used in the Move/Copy command is the same as Copy/Paste which should have created multiple components and shown up in the Parts List on one line with a quantity of 2 or however many you copied.  I test this on your assembly and it worked just fine.  One thing I did notice is that your renamed each copied component, this will make it unique so that could be your problem. The only other method of getting the parts list result you desire is to save all components as External components.  After being saved you can create an assembly and place them into it as Linked components, these will show up in the parts list with one line per component and a quantity.

So I do not know what the best thing is to do in your case.  Because the method you said you used should have worked except in the sub-assembly you have but probably did not because the renaming of the components messed it up.

Last thing, you really need to use Capture Design History (Timeline).  It would really help you work in Fusion 360.

I'll try saving them as External Components.

And yeah, i've been using the tool to copy my components and it have worked nicelly, this is the first time it hasn't worked and I can not understand why, I must have messed up somehow. And I tried renaming them after the copy was made because they were not with the same name as the original component.

If saving them as external components doesn't work, I'll do it all again.

Thank you for the tips and help (:

There is no need to save them as external components.
