Bend radius using pipe function for steel bike frame

I am designing a bike steel tube with various bends and angles. I am not sure that the bends are very realistic. I used the pipe function to turn my sketch into a tube. Is there some extra functionality I am missing to constrain the bends?

Hi,

obviously the base for the frame is a 3-D sketch
At this moment, these do not allow any dimensions or constraints.

Is there another superior way I could have drawn the tube?

Depending on your tube diameter, there will be a minimum bend radius, you want to put that radius into your sketch. To do that you can use a fillet in the corners of your sketch, in other words, no right angle corners.

One other question. What does the global diameter represent in the pipe function? Is that the outer pipe diameter or inner?

Yes I guess I could have...

 

Thinking about it is is neither the inner or outer diameter as it is just a line at that point. When you thicken if you use a positive value it becomes the inner diameter so I needed to use a negative value for my pipe as I knew the desired outer diameter.

Is there a reason your using the sculpt environment pipe instead of the pipe command in the solid environment?

If this were my project I would do as the intersection of 2 2D sketches - similar to the piping on on this seat.

 

In the image, the blue curves are planar 2D sketches.

The purple curves are the resulting 3D sketch intersections of the planar curves.

Strive to fully define your 2D sketches (they will change to darker color and show push pin in browser when fully defined).

If the 2D sketch dimensions are edited - the 3d sketches should automatically update.
