auto-highlight of hidden objects making it impossible to measure things!

I've read around but found no solution to this.  I have everything turned off except the one body I want to inspect, except when I try to select points or edges, I get a storm of auto-highlighting inserting itself as my selection. Sometimes the right view angle I can access the edge or point I want, but that is hardly a solution.

If I hide something, I want it GONE, not just invisible!

I tried multiple settings and finally got something to work using the filter and selection priority AND window selection tool, but that was pretty awkward to constantly change as needed.

However, I just reinstalled and it seems to be working ideally!

Do you have auto project geometry to active sketches turned off? I find it distracting when on.
