Anyone here an expert on wood grain rendering?

Are there any cost effective tools out there that really handle wood grain rendering well?

It seems like there's no way to render the true nature of woodgrain. It seems like you'd need a 3d texture but I've never heard of such a thing.

Any wisdom regarding this?

Thanks 🙂

sorry hahahah

Because the nodes require for procedural wood textures a deep understanding of vector math manipulation it is really only usable for somebody who does it alot.

That is why I actually promoted that Autodesk should include a material that has those algorythems included as one material with options to choose from.

This will enable designers simply to change certain values easily like color grain size distortion and such.

VRay has a dedicated car paint shader where it emulates the flakes below a glossy layer.

All this is no magic today anymore.

I am simply using Blender on a daily basis and while I have a licence from Octane to Vray and Thea and went back to Cycles and Blender simply because of the GPU speed.

But for somebody how does this here and there this might not really be an ideal option.

Give me your email and I send it to you.

Creating 3D models with wood materials using 2D UV mapping remains a laborious process since, as cekuhnen mentioned, the appearance of wood material truly lives in 3D volume space instead of 2D. Therefore, at Autodesk, we are currently working on a new 3D procedural wood material to resolve this issue. Different from previous procedural models using simple 3D noise, this 3D wood material physically models the anatomical structure of wood, such as fibers, pores, rays, etc, and designs elaborate noise functions to achieve various structural deformations of real wood. Also, the grain and geometric details along arbitrary wood cuts through the tree can be simulated. Further, due to the generated wood fiber direction, our new wood material intrinsically supports the distinctive secondary wood highlight, which pushes the rendering quality to the next level.

Here is an image rendered using this new wood material to show our initial results. From this image, you can see the early/late wood grain, darkened pores and interesting wood highlights. Moreover, surface bumps (or pores) are also simulated.

Please keep in mind, this is currently a work in progress to demonstrate the potential features and the image is rendered without any artistic fine tuning. Although we cannot predict an exact release date, this 3D procedural wood material will surely be available to Fusion users in the near future.

Yes, UV mapping can be very labor intensive. Most of the time I spent on the chair rendering was spent UV mapping and making sure the obvious areas were not visible in the shots.
I've been interested in photorealistic rendering for a long time and my first attempts were with DKB trace. Over the years I've seen many attempts for procedural wood shaders and all have fallen short in one or the other area. What Autodesk is attempting to do here is truly ambitions and these first results look very promising!

well looks like a good start. I hope the visual level can be pushed further.

Hi,

Just following up on this previous post regarding 3D Procedural Wood Materials in Fusion. Any update or estimated availability in Fusion?

Thanks!
