Alignment issues

I am making a bookcase.  I designed some components and inserted them and others I did top down.

I inserted 2 shelves into the project, a small and a large that are in different sections of the book case.

I positioned the large one and am trying to align the top deck of the smaller one with the top deck of the large one.  See image 1

I get a no alignment suggested by the geometry could be found error.

Any ideas?

Hi @Anonymous,

Have tried to Join them instead of using the move command?

Ben,

Thanks for the reply.  Ultimately that is what I did (set up a joint) but it took 4 steps instead of one.  I wasn't using the "MOVE" command as such but rather the "ALIGN" command, which works well in other portions of the model.  The work around was fine, I just don't understand why the "ALIGN" tactic should fail.  There are other things I work on where that work around would present down stream problems.

Unfortunately, I can't answer that. But I can tell you, that I'm rarely using the Move or Align command. I'm Always creating the parts In Place. This way I'm using the As-built Joint, very easy!
I'll use the Move or Align command, if I import a part and that's it.
Build the parts In Place, that's the right Fusion 360 workflow.

Ben.

I agree in general that parts in place is best, however, if you are using the same part over and over in different places in the same design, don't you run into a problem with them being linked, so that when you move one, you move them all?

When I say parts, I mean Components. Components are not linked to each other.
