Airfoil Loft and setting Rails

Hi All,

@davebYYPCU  you can probably help here but others are welcome to chip in.

I have had to leave this Project a few weeks and just got back to it.

So Modelling a 1/12 Scale Lockheed L-1011. I know what I want to do and how I can do it but cannot get my Loft

of the Wing to work. I think I know what is happening but I don't know how to fix it.

I have Closed all of my Airfoils and drawn a Rail from the trailing edge of the Airfoils. When I Loft the Airfoils I

cannot seem to set the Rail and it seems to use the leading edge. Two of the Airfoils are identical except for size

and the third is a different but similar shape. What happens is I get a nice straight leading edge but it creates a

curved trailing edge. The shape itself would probably fly quite well but is NOT what I want.

It doesn't seem to be using my Rails at all. How do I tell the Software which Rails to use?

My intention is to use this Loft as the outer surface of the Wing Skin, then use an identical Loft but slightly smaller

(2mm) to Cut and leave a 2mm thick Wing Skin.

I then want to make the internal Loft again and modify it then create the Ribs with an Intersect.

While you are reading, a Technical Question for @davebYYPCU

I considered Slicing off the Leading Edge and using Stunted Ribs and then if I actually Built the Model then use a

single piece of Balsa for the Leading Edge for strength and stiffness. Your advice here? Just trying to use the Model

it as you would built it theory.

Thanks all.

Accepted solution

I would just use two lofts. The first connecting profiles 1 and 2.   The second connecting profiled 2 and 3.

Might help

Did you click on the plus sign in the rail box?

Hi,

Don't you just hate it when you pull your hair out trying to work something out - post for help - then work out the

exact same solution? Thanks for your reply, it is working now and that is exactly what I did.

Got the Wing Skin happening, now to do the Ribs.

Cheers

I've shown this before here, cut the ribs out of the solid wing.
And since spars and recesses are also needed, cut those out as well before creating the ribs.

Hi,

I did check the Forum Posts before I posted - I must have missed it.

I have the Ribs and Weight Holes now. Just have to create the Spars.

Took many small steps but I think I got it right.

Basically, I prepare the solid wing so that at the end you only have to cut out the ribs.

Simplified, without the feet.

And yes, you can see it flying here

For milling or laser cutting a DXF was exported.
