Adding Lap Joint Siding to Boat Hull

I would like to ask for any suggestions on how to model the lap joint boards on the sides of this boat hull model.  It will be 3D printed so it must be modeled.  The boat hull is attached and a picture similar to what I am looking for.  The picture shows holes in the hull, please ignore those.  If the boat hull needs to be created from scratch with the lap joint sides that is OK also.  

Thanks for any ideas.

This is something I've been thinking about doing for a long time, but have never had the courage to start. 

 

I think the way to do this is to draw the section of each strake at each frame and then loft between the sections.

 

This is a website with plans and photos of the boats that I would interest in building, which may help.

hello @jhackney1972  maybe that's a way - but doesn't look very natural. it's up to you to refine the profile.

when someone who helps hundreds of other people asks for help, you know the problem will be an interesting one, @jhackney1972 !

 

While loft is a possibility, as @billbedford says, it will require a lot of sketches.  I wonder (without having tried it) whether Sweep with a guide surface might work.

 

Since this will be 3D printed, you won't need to accurately model each actual board (the overlaps), which helps, I think.

 

I wish I had all day to play with this, it seems like a fun challenge...

I agree with @jeff_strater. If you're asking for help it'll certainly be a curious problem to solve. If you are concerned with accurate geometry for the boards, I think sweep would be the way to go but you would probably have to build every path off of the geometry of the preceding board.

 

I'm interested to see what the forum has to offer as this discussion continues.

here is one approach - using Sweep with rail + guide, as a surface.  It was interesting to see how sensitive the surface is to very small changes in path, guide, and profile.  Not sure that this is a good approach, TBH

Many thanks to all responses and suggestions on how to solve my question on how to add "simulated" lap siding to my boat hull.  @mango.freund hit upon the simplest and most effective method and from the pictures you can see I have done one side.  I used only a 0.125 offset on each lap, which is not enough, as you can see in the section analysis, but good enough to prove concept.  One side is done and that is all I need at this time.  Model is attached if anyone is interested.

 

Thanks for the method Mango.  Your second submission seem a bit more work than I wanted to tackle plus the results were not as good.  Thanks again all for your support.

I'd do it like you would if building a real boat.  Loft and fit each plank.

If it were for a real boat, this probably would be the best, but for a model that someone, not me, is going to just 3D print, too much work.

But lapstrake boats were usually built as a planked shell and then had the frames fitted afterwards.

This is quite a professional job!  I am amazed at your detail and precision.  As I mentioned in my original post, the person who is going to 3D print this would probably be overwhelmed with your model but it truly is the correct way to layout a "real" lap joint boat hull if you intent is fabricate it.  Thanks for the effort.

Thanks. I know you said you didn't need that level of detail. It was more of an exercise to flex some of the less used muscles. Or an exercise in futility, depending on how you look at it.

I love @mango.freund's approach. Simple and very effective!

 

In respect to some of the other models. When designing a "real" boat, you NEVER start with the internals of the boat. You start with the exterior surface, and everything else is derived from it.
