Adding appearance to multiple surfaces at once, i this case recessed text

I'm looking for a way to add appearance to several surfaces at once after I recessed letters inside a simple body ad I want the letters to have different appearance than the body, in this case those are letter (STEEL) on a wooden plate

Yes, you can do this.  If you select all the faces that you want before invoking the Appearance command, you can do it by setting "Faces" as the target, and dragging an appearance onto just one of the selected faces.  The trick is how to select just the faces you want.  I show how to do both in this screencast:

 I noticed that you didn't have to select the Faces radio button in the second (mass selection) method. Why is that?
