Add a decal or canvas to a linked component in an assembly

I am putting together packaging for a product.  We're putting assorted products into small bags, then all the small bags go into a bigger bag.  We want to use the same size bags to put the product in - just put different labels on the bags.

I have modeled the filled bag (lots of splines and lofts), and want to import the bag into the final assembly multiple times and apply different decals to the copies for each of the products.

If I break the link to the source model I can do this just fine (just make the component active and add the decal), but I can't add decal, or canvas, if the link to the original model is intact.

I'd like to leave the links intact, so when I change my mind about the size of the bag I only make the change once.

Any suggestions?

copy the design you would like to use many times. go to the top of map (tree) and right click and select option "paste as new". then apply decals

I dont get a "paste as new" option on the menu, only paste.  If I paste, then I get another linked copy that wont accept a decal.  Does "paste as new" create a copy linked to the original model, or  stand alone entity that wont update if the original is changed?

Hey there @Anonymous

Unfortunately, as far as I know, the way Fusion works does not allow for what you're aiming at.

But I'd create copies of the same component (small bags) and add the different decals on them (In every component instance), then import every new component into the "assembly" file and this way  you'd have the bags with their decals and should they need modifications you only need to change the dimension on every component instance, which yes, might be tedious.

But hey, this is a nice time to maybe propose an idea in the IdeaStation part of this forum, It could be anything like allowing decals or additions to linked components, etc. If it gets attention this might be implemented in a future software update.

Anyway hope this helps!

This is possible, but not if you work with linked components.

1. Insert one of your bags into your assembly.

2. Break the link.

3. Create as many empty new components as you need bags. You can also do this as the need for bags arises.

4. Copy the body for the original bag component into the empty components.

In these components you can now apply different decals to each component. When you edit the original component the geometry in the other components will update.
