3-12-19 update Hole command

In a simple, tapped hole command I see some new things.

Full thread and partial thread. The partial thread is a bit of a mystery.

With a straight hole when would a partial thread be used? Seems like a ship in a bottle scenario.

 

Enlightenment please.

When the bottom portion of the hole is just relief space and you don't need to thread it all the way down.

When the screw is just a retainer for a deeper pin that sits beneath it.

When it's for a grease zerc.

When it's for a little plug at the end of a long drainage hole.

When it's for a choke in a shotgun barrel.

 

Etc., etc., etc. Save wear and tear on your taps, machine time, and chip cleanup volume.

 

Enjoy your newfound enlightenment!

Yeah, I kind of thought it was for a short thread in a long hole

BUT

This does not appear to adhere to that idea and drops the thread down the hole.

I patterned the thread above just to see if I could do it. It's going to a take a rubber bolt though.

 

Here is a full thread and an offset thread to demonstrate my "say what?"

Weird. I'm able to position the partial threads wherever I wish, including right at the top.

Yeah I tinkered with the .1 input. FWIW such a thing could be done with a single point. thread mill.

Sure. But for some weird reason some people like to model their holes. You know, so that Drawing views look right and dumb stuff like that.

Morning,

Chris, I buy what you are selling.

I don't bother with the modeled threads unless I have to show it to someone.

Just thought I would see what the new stuff offered.

However I don't grasp what need that d17:thread offset field addresses.

Are you saying this is strictly for a visual effect?

 

Here is something that is odd and may not be working as intended.

Start with the thread the way we currently have it with the hole tap type / Tapped icon activated.

Now, change hole tap type to clearance.  

It changes the 3/8-16 thread originally chosen to a M2 metric.

 

Anyone know what "clearance" is supposed to accomplish?

The Model Parameter D17, in your file, is the Thread Depth. You don't understand what purpose having a defined thread depth serves?

 

Within the hole, D16 is how far down the thread starts, and D17 is how far down the thread stops. D17 minus D16 is the total length of the threaded portion of the hole.

Why, without a counterbore / relief would you want a thread to begin further down from the hole entry?

Maybe you want the threads up from the back side of a through hole, but it's just more convenient in your model to locate the hole from the front side?

 

Maybe you're putting one hole through two components and you want the threads to exactly match up on their facing sides?

 

Maybe you want to model a hole that has had a set screw run down inside of it, and then had the threads behind it filled in with JBWeld to keep the set screw from backing out?

 

Maybe (and this is the one that I think is most likely) they just built the functionality for outside threads, and didn't do all the extra work to make a separate pallet of options unique to inside threads?

You can select a thread for a bolt that you want insert through that hole. The hole will have clearance to insert that bolt.
