2D drawing failure

Dear Sir:

I have created a 3D drawing.

I have created a number (~60) of 2D drawings from components of the 3D file.

All of the 2D drawings are in one  file.

The 3D and 2D files are in the same folder.

When I open the 2D drawing file most of the drawing thumbnails along the bottom are grayed out.

When I click on a 2d drawing thumbnail it shows the drawing in the work area but only the title block, dimensions and notes are there, all the drawings are gone and replaced with red boxes.

I have spent many hours building these drawings. Do I have to throw them all away and start over?

Also, there are a few 2D drawing thumbnails that are blank and I can not delete them.

Your help will be appreciated.

Mark

Hi Mark,

The empty red boxes mean the source for that view is not being found.  From your screen capture, all of the components in the browser are unchecked, therefore not being included for these views.

The grayed out thumbnails in the sheet bar at the bottom indicate sheets that have not been updated.  This would happen after Get Latest (after the parent design has been edited and saved).

What was the last edit you did before this happened?  Are you working with Animations?  Did you change visibility states in an animation, maybe turn many components off?  What is the current state of the design (f3d) this drawing is associated with?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris:

Thank you for your reply.

You pointed out that the components in the browser are unchecked/suppressed. I have gone in and checked the appropriate component to unsuppress it in each drawing.  This seems to solve the problem, though some drawings require some repair, thank you.

I do not understand why this happened. It has been quite time consuming to repair these drawings.

I am not using animations for this design yet, but I plan to to create exploded view drawings.

I have made the 3D model by making sketches and creating components from the sketches.  This way, when I change dimensions on a sketch all components change accordingly and their geometries mesh properly. I am modeling mortice and tenon joinery. I need the mortices to follow the tenons when I move one component relative to another.

There may be a better way to do this. If you have any thoughts I would be interested in considering them.

The last edit I made to the 3D model.

The last change I made was a small dimension change to a sketch which affected only two components.

It may be an issue that many components rely on this sketch even though only two components were changed, I do not know.

When you ask "What is the current state of the design (f3d) this drawing is associated with?" I do not know what this means.

It may be helpful for me to give you access to my design so you can look at it directly.  Just let me know if you think this would be helpful to our discussion.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the update.  Your comment here: "The last change I made was a small dimension change to a sketch which affected only two components." may be a hint of what was happening.

When I asked about the current state of the design (when Get Latest in the drawing was done), were you in edit sketch mode when you saved the design?

From a drawing's point of view, when you edit a sketch in the design, the design has the timeline rolled back, so if you save the design then Get Latest in the drawing, thats the state of the design that the drawing will update for.  It can be a little confusing, if you exit sketch before saving the design, the drawing should be correct after Get Latest.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris:

You said "when you edit a sketch in the design, the design has the timeline rolled back,".

So if the timeline is rolled back when I save the 3D file and then I "Get Latest" to update the 2D drawings, the rolled back state is what the 2D drawings update for.  Thus many components do not show. I think this has been my problem.

I have noticed from time to time when I opened the file that the timeline was rolled back but I did not know why.

You have been very helpful.

Thank You:

Mark
