timeline object index for occurrence that references an external component?

Has anybody figured out how to get a timeline object that will provide a value for its index property, when its entity is an occurrence that references an external component? The occurrence has a timeline object, but when I reference its index property it results in a run-time error. Bug maybe?

The desired timeline object clearly exists, because it can be found by iterating through design.timeline.items(), but that doesn't seem like the preferred way to find it.
