Airfoil DAT to Spline

Hi everyone!

I decided to create dedicated thread for my Airfoil DAT to Spline  script.

Here you can share your ideas, ask questions and get support as from me as from other members of community who already using it.

On time of writing script has been downloaded over 800 times.

Most number of issues which I have got by e-mail with script was due to wrong DAT file structure.

For example, all values in one line, wrong delimiters, etc.

Proper DAT file should look like this

The first line should be name of airfoil and new sketch will be renamed with use of it.

All following lines are X and Y coordinates (relatively to selected construction plane).

If the first and last coordinates are the same spline will be closed. If different, spline will be open.

As bonus I attached the latest (unpublished) version of "Airfoil DAT to Spline" script. Hopefully you know what to do with it.

Update: Attachment deleted.

Most plugin installers ending work with error message. Manually placed scripts works fine. OS X version is 10.14.4.

Script doesn't work on construction planes on angles. Same DAT file runs just fine if I use a 0-90 construction plane.

I cannot see anyone got the problem i'm facing. According to the video, once i started the script, i should choose the cartesian plane on which i would like draw the profile. But there is not any plane on the 3d view. Then, i let the chord 100mm and AOI i give 3 degree. The "ok" button is disable. Then, i don't know i can get file dat. From the http://www.airfoiltools.com; i can get see the dat file written in a little window, but there is not any download button: what i have to do get the file? I looke around but i could not fine any user manuale or something that lead me to use the script properly. Is there a way to understand how the script should works?

I tryed 1.7 and 2.0. Both the same behaviour.

I have the same problem.  Cannot select the construction plane.  The normal 3 planes at the origin are not shown.  Just some arrows on the X-Z plane that seem to define the chord.  But the OK button is disabled because I cannot select the construction plane.  Using v2.0 which I just downloaded and installed.  Wish I could help you.  Wish someone could help us.  Thanks

Have you tried selecting the basic X, Y and Z planes at the origin?

I don't think this script can handle arbitrary construction planes, only
those that are vertical or horizontal (ie. following the main axes) .
You may have to use a temp construction plane following a main axis and
then rotate the curve to your arbitrary construction plane.

Thank you for your reply.  I cannot select the basic X Y or Z plane because they are not displayed.  When I am in a sketch I can see them, but as soon as I run the script they disappear and no plane is selectable.  I do see arrows on the X Z plane which appear to define the chord length but no amount of clicking selects the construction plane.  So the OK button is never enabled (stays grayed out).  I just downloaded this add in so maybe I am missing something.  What I see is NOT what his video shows (at 0:19), where the origin planes are clearly available when the script is run.  Wish I knew why.

Thanks again for your reply...

I figured out how to Select the plane after the ones shown at the origin disappear when I go to the add in:  On the left side of the screen in the origin folder you can select XY, XZ, or YZ planes.  This tells the add in which plane to put the spline onto.  I attached a screen recording to show it.  Hope it helps someone!

Hello,

I am having problems with the instaler on my Mac. It runs normally but finally it says that the instalation cannot be concluded. I start from the pkg file directly downloaded from Autodesk shop.

You mentioned a way to direct copy-paste the script in the addin folders, is that right? how does it works?

thanks.

Hi Jorge,

I used the method moving the script to the correct place some time ago, recent versions could be installed using the provided script.

There is no need to do it manually.

Kind regards, Klaus

I tried it but the installator doesn't complete the instalation.

where can I find the script without the instigator? I would try the option copy paste.

thanks.

Hi,

I have no idea about the location for the scripts. It’s a possibility for advanced Mac / PC users to overcome shortcomings during the installation process.
I don’t have this deep operating system knowledge.
Sorry, Klaus
