Does anyone know if there are currently any apps that would take a model that is too large for your 3D printer and separate it into small sections with joinery/joints that can fit into your printer? its not the end of the world to split these models into small pieces but automation would be nice.

It would be fairly easy to write something to do this, but I don't think I would want to use it because it would be better to give some thought about how the model is broken up.

For example, I would want to try to break it along sharp edges, so the seams will be hidden when it's but back together. I would also want to break it up so the pieces could be oriented to avoid as many supports as possible. Both of these goals would be difficult to automate.

Yeah i was going to write my own then when I considered in joint placement I was thinking that it may be better to check for something that may have more features to it than purely grid sections. I appreciate the response !
