View navigation (zoom, pan, orbit) extremely slow

Hi,

I've been using Fusion for a couple of months and it works just great until this problem came up around before the June 11 update. I'm experiencing an extreme lag (even close to freezing with its seconds to minutes long respond) in view navigation (zoom, pan, orbit) while other things work just fine (e.g. create sketch, new file, upload, right click, and other buttons). Even if I create a brand new design, it still doesn't fix this issue. The ViewCube doesn't seem to be working as well. Everything around that involves changing the view is messed up.

I use:

Lenovo B40-80 (Intel Core i3-5005U CPU @ 2.00 GHz with 4GB RAM + AMD Radeon R5 M330)

64-bit Windows 8.1

Fusion: Autodesk Fusion 360 V.2.0.4233

I also attached a ~30 seconds video about the issue I'm facing.

Been tweaking around and looking up for solutions but now I'm out of idea. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi @farrell.hung

Thanks for posting! It looks like you are experiencing some problems with the navigational commands in Fusion 360.

This is often a graphics issue - are you certain that you are using the most recent drivers for your system? Please update your graphics drivers if necessary.

I would also recommend checking to ensure any peripheral or display drivers you are using are fully updated as well.

You can also try to disable any display or text scaling on your system:

  • Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display
  • Change setting to 100%
  • Select Set custom text size (DPI)
  • Make sure the Custom DPI setting is set to 100%

I also have some general suggestions:

  • Remove or update old 3D connexion or Wacom drivers.
  • Ensure your video card is the dedicated GPU for your machine (power saver settings will turn off dedicated GPU while on battery). Use Graphics Diagnostic (in the ?Help menu upper right).
  • Turn off video effects.
  • Restart your machine.
  • Turn off any other persistent app that is always on when you are using Fusion.
  • Exiting/entering Fullscreen
  • Maximizing/minimizing window
  • Resize the Fusion window
  • Optimize Fusion for performance
  • View > Reset to default layout view

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you continue to see problems - I'm happy to assist.

Hi Paul, Thanks for the reply!

I've tried and checked everything you listed but still no luck. However, I noticed when I do ALT+Command+R (reset to default layout view), the view responds instantly! So, after I use zoom/pan/orbit, I'll have to wait seconds for the view to change, but if I press ALT+Command+R after it, the view changes to how it's supposed to be - following the given navigation commands - without any delay.

After discovering that ALT+Command+R "refreshes" the view, I tried spamming ALT+Command+R all the way (keep pressing it with my left hand) while moving around the view. It works, but the view will be flashing all the time (since I keep resetting the view) and keeping my left hand holding 3 buttons each time I want to navigate around is not an easy job.

I'm sorry if I can't explain clearly what happens when I press ALT+Command+R, so if you still doubt what I mean, please ask.

Thank you

Hi @farrell.hung

Thanks for posting! This seems like a graphics issue for me - would you mind providing me with a screenshot of your graphics diagnostic page?

You could record a screencast illustrating the behavior on your end - this may help us continue troubleshooting. I'd also like to confirm the behavior when booting up in safe mode.

Sorry for the late reply.

I attached the screenshots of the graphics diagnostics + screencast of the issue. Also, Fusion works fine when I boot up in safe mode - no problem at all.

EDIT: Screencast doesn't show up, so I repost the screencast

Hi @farrell.hung

Thanks for the response. I notice two key things here:

  1. Your graphics drivers are from 2015. Please update them to the most recent version available from AMD.
  2. If Fusion runs properly in safe mode, this is usually indicative that some other process is occurring on the computer that is interfering with Fusion 360. One way to approach these problems is to boot up (not in safe mode), enter Task Manager, and start ending processes until Fusion 360 works normally.

Usually when a process is interfering with navigation commands in Fusion, it tends to be either a peripheral device, graphics, or display driver.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Fixed the problem. I tried killing tasks and programs until Windows crashed but it doesn't seem to help. Turns out my graphics driver weren't installed properly. At first, when I re-perform the driver installation, it says that the recommended driver (Radeon Software) version is 17.4.4 while I had 17.7.1 installed. I installed v17.4.4, restart, and tried my Fusion again, no luck. Re-run the driver installer, and says that v17.7.1 is optional driver, so I reinstalled it again, restart, and tried my Fusion back again, but still the same. Tried downloading several other AMD component stuffs from the AMD website (those optional downloads) and still not working. At last I tried to re-install the Radeon Software to v17.4.4, but this time I chose Custom Install > Check everything > "Clean" install (not the normal install). I have no idea what does the "clean" really mean but I guess it's the thing that got this problem fixed. Although now Fusion keep telling that my graphics driver is outdated and the graphics diagnostic says my driver is from 2015, the problem is now fixed.

EDIT: this also helps

Thank you for the help and support.
