Unable to select spline-based face to emboss on

If I sketch a spline, and extrude it, I can use emboss on the curved face. However, if I create a spline, use offset command on it, then extrude that profile, emboss command doesn't work on its face; it is unselectable.

The reason for creating spline and an offset was that later on I can do a cut using same sketch. I guess I can solve this by using two sketches instead of one. But still, a bit odd, since the surface is curved in a single dimension either way. So it kind of sounds like something emboss command should have worked on.

I attached a simple example demonstrating what I was attempting to do.

you are correct.  Emboss today does not support this kind of surface.  It's just a limitation that exists, sorry.

No worries. I simply created two sketches to go around it. One with spline only to extrude on (on which embossing worked perfectly), and the other to make the cut I needed.

Any chance you can explain this better?  I have a student trying to make a ring with a spline revolve on the inside and then emboss words on the spline and we can't get it to work.  We tried creating a rectangle revolve just outside the spline revolve to see if we could cut it through the rectangle one into the other and then delete the rectangle one that we didn't need, but that didn't work.  It didn't cut into the spline revolve, only the rectangle revolve.  Is there any work around to do this?
