Tapered Variable Pitch Thread

 Does anyone know how generate a tool-path for a tapered variable pitch thread similar to the parts at the link below. Can this type of tool path be generated for use with a lathe or a 4th axis on a milling machine?

I would not be using Fusion for these parts honestly. This is a level of complexity that would likely suit something like Hypermill or Powermill and multiaxis grinding software to finish.

Can it be done with Powermill? I think that there is a free trial so i may download that & see how user friendly it is. (I love Fusion for that reason but it seems limited in a few areas. Still a great program thou don't get me wrong.)

Honestly I am not sure offhand, it was just a thought. I have opened it a few times but it is vastly different than HSM and have not put any real time into learning it. There are a few videos on YouTube for getting started. I also can't speak to what posts it has available or through whom you'd find support (presumably resellers).

Okay, thanks for your input. I may also give the HSM a try & see about maybe using it for things like these. Again, depending on how user friendly it is. (That's the one thing that I love about Fusion 360. It is very user friendly)

Hi @Anonymous,

 

Just want to clear up any confusion, but the HSM CAM kernel is what powers the CAM in Fusion (as well as Inventor HSM and HSMWorks), which as @Steinwerks mentioned, is not very well-equipped to handle the workflow you are trying to use.

Thanks, I'll have to figure something out. Maybe the Powermill can do the trick.

Hey guys, just an FYI: I was able to get fusion to do the trick. The trick is to split the shaft into halves & then generate the tool paths for each half of the shaft using the 3d milling tool-paths instead of wrapping the tool paths around the shaft. I have to admit that it's not "perfect" but it will do the trick with a little clean-up / sanding in the lathe. Just thought that I'd let you guys know in case anyone else had the same question. BTW: I did download the Autodesk Powermill software & was not able to do jack with it. Fusion seems like better software by far.
