Ubuntu Linux

Ubuntu Linux

I need to facepalm everytime I read replies from companies like AutoDesk and Adobe in response to a request for Ubuntu/Linux support. Every time its met with a well Microsoft has 85% market share so the time is not worth our effort.

Just like:

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2181620

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-ideastation-request-a/linux/idi-p/4530727/page/13#

It is only because companies like Autodesk and Adobe do not support Linux is why Microsoft holds the market share, everyone is forced to use an insecure bloated operating system because the software they depend on only works on Windows.

I understand the difficulty in supporting different code bases for different operating systems but with the technologies available today there is no reason you cannot write one set of code that operates on all platforms. Just look at Microsoft's own products, they are all being re-written for cross-platform Microsoft Code was their first product to do so and they are doing more just to capture the market of Linux.

Bottom line is Windows has become garbage and yet the leading software manufacturers like yourselves prevent anyone from having a choice to get away from it. I don't like the fact that proprietary CAD designs get uploaded automatically to Microsoft's servers and there is literally nothing you can do to stop it unless you are running enterprise volume license windows.

I don't like it that windows comes pre-installed with 100's of services that you will never use which is why it is so easy for hackers to steal your proprietary secrets to begin with and no the worlds best anti-virus and firewall solution will not stop it, you won't even know they are there.

Bottom line Autodesk should want to boast an Ubuntu version, its the perfect marketing against your competitors. Install your CAD solutions on a minimal install of Ubuntu with hardened kernel to protect your proprietary designs from Advanced threats. Get your copy of Autodesk XXX product today!

If you don't think this is an issue I beg you to go watch the Engima Conference videos and talks especially the ones from the NSA. Then do some research into why companies like facebook and google are pushing for not only opensource software and firmware but also opensourc hardware because the reality is when it comes to Windows there is no such thing as security, it is all security theater and the companies who sell it are just selling snakeoil.

Ubuntu coupled with things like AMD Epyc processors with memory encryption is a start, it will get even better once AMD opensources the firmware to compete with IBM Openpower in the security space.

Bottom line: Intel and Windows = insecure and is just asking to give your proprietary secrets away to other countries who will beat you to market.

Just think of how amazing Autodesk products would look in the Ubuntu Budgie Desktop 🙂 both security and good looks 🙂

This is why they are doing fusion in the browser, yes it would be nices but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Except that wouldn't make any sense considering there is no such thing as browser and security the two words don't even go together and completely ignores the entire point of my post.

At this point I would be moderately OK with using Fusion 360 in a browser if I could do it from my Linux installs.  I have been running linux for over 8 years now as my main OS and it annoys me to no end that I have to boot to Winblows and do my 3d modeling, and some gamin as well. It is also annoying to me that it feels like the version of fusion 360 I have is more of a browser with a skin over it than an actual program for the most part! If it is going to feel like that I should be able to run chrome or Firefox or what ever Supported browser you guys choose and stay in linux and do all of my modeling!!!   I appreciate all the hard work you guys and gals do, and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays if you do not go for Christmas... I in the past week have had Winblows has crashed a few times and linux rocks away all day long. It would be sooo much nicer to be in Linux is about what I am saying...   Thanks again for all the hard work!!!

I think the majority of serious users like the idea of keeping proprietary ideas just that. The only way to do that is on Linux.... windows 10, cloud and so on is just up for the taking to any hacker or team who want's your designs (china). Any cloud provider claiming to provide security to your data unless that data is encrypted with a key that can only be decrypted on your local workstation is just blowing smoke up your butt.

Ever wonder why Microsoft ships its new Windows 10 server just like Linux, with nothing running by default? its because even they understand that the desktop OS is complete rubbish. Also look into why Google doesn't even try to protect saved passwords in the browser and never will.... want to check? they are stored in plain text and Googles own chief security officer said there are no plans to change it because it would be pointless "Because they have the data the proves it".

Not even the legendary Protonmail is able to avoid snooping because while everything is encrypted and only decrypted on your local windows PC, the private key is sent encrypted to your PC then is decrypted when you type your password in.... keylogger says thanks for your private key and the password to decrypt it. Protonmail will need to integrate Yubikey Hardware keys to provide any real security.

Point is at this current time a truly secure cloud does not exist. Linux based workstations in combination with encryption and yubikey authentication methods are the only hope for professionals even Microsoft is rewriting their software to be cross-platform that should tell you something. Windows 10 is merely the largest honeypot in the world designed to supply threat intelligence to Microsoft so they can sell their advance threat mitigation solutions to the corporations willing to shell out money for the per seat licenses at around $65 per employee per month. Antivirus cannot detect 50% of what is in the wild, Microsoft's solution was to turn everyone's PC's into lab rats that report home. Basically, Windows 10 wasn't free, the honeypot service you provide by running windows 10 is the revenue model.

If cloud providers were transparent about the number of breaches they have nobody would trust the cloud. Companies serious about the designs they do on Autodesk products would be smart not to trust cloud-based solutions. That is not to say that cloud-based features are not welcome. If you are working on an opensource project that you wish to share with others then, by all means, send the design to the cloud for collaboration. I actually wish Autodesk cloud worked more like Github for these types of things, would be great if people could just fork ideas and improve upon them then submit a pull request back to the original author if they wanted to. I think innovation would go much further faster. but this is a bad idea for proprietary designs.

With Autodesk supporting a OSX a "UNIX-like os" I would think the move to Linux would be a relatively simple although time consuming one. A good friend works on old UNIX mainframes and the majority of his writing and debugging code is done on his mac then tweaked and uploaded to the mainframe so the possibility is there.

As some of you may have already seen, Autodesk stated here  (https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-ideastation-request-a/linux/idi-p/4530727) and there (https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-ideastation-request-a/build-fusion-for-ubuntu/idi-p/658154...) that they are focusing on realising a browser version of Fusion 360.

However, this would not solve the security issues, unless you use a safe browser.

It is not like there was a technology invented which creates software reuse, software abstraction and works across many operating systems.  Boy, wouldn't that be an amazing technology but would would it be called? What would you call the software objects like window, dialog boxes, text input, etc?  Such objects could be rendered and oriented the same in the abstraction.  Maybe Object Oriented Programming software?  But when will this be invented and for sure Microsoft would NEVER want it to exist since it would create software developers who knew how to make software for all operating systems instead of just that One Microsoft Way.

Pathetic excuses and probably half truths.
