stl import unit selection

stl import unit selection

Currently the Fusion importer assumes that an stl is in centimeters with no option to change it - other than scaling once open.

I would like to see an import dialog box with the option to set the units in cm, mm, inches, as well as setting a user defined scale.

I would also like to see files retain their file extensions after import.

This is especially important because it seems that I'm only able to scale up after an import. So, scaling down from cm to mm is impossible. The workaround is to start a new drawing, create a new form, then insert a new mesh from the .stl file. Oddly, this process does allow me to choose the units. So, maybe just make these two process use the same code? Also, the header in my .stl file includes a property that shows the units that are intended for the object. You should be able to default to those units instead of blindly selecting default units.

@robhalvo - are you importing from your desktop or from the data panel?

This is when an stl is added from the data panel. Such as dragging in. I have now learned to Insert/Insert Mesh but find it odd that it loads from desktop and not the data panel. My assumed workflow was to upload files (stl, obj, etc...) then insert to project file.

I expect whether I use Insert/Insert mesh or drag a mesh file from the data panel that it would import the same way with the same ability to set units. (like I do with Insert/Insert Mesh. That seems a reasonable expectation.

Thanks

Robbie

I also just had this problem. I uploaded my STL to the project folder. and then dragged it into the current model edit window. It always came in 10x too big, and there was no way to scale it.

Also, when I tried to drag and drop a STEP file to the project folder, it just showed me the text of the file, and I had to right click to get a back button. It seemed like it would be a reasonable shorthand for pressing the "Upload" button and dragging to the window, but I guess not...
