Yep, this would be great. When you create a new sheet metal part the default is a body. If you create 3 sheet metal bodys you can only unroll one because you can only do it once for a component. All the bodys seem to act like beeing in one component.
So if you mess up when creating the bodys you have to go back and draw you part again. You can not edit the history regarding if you want a body or a component.
I'm discovering this issue as I create production files for an assembly I've been working on for weeks. I'm down to my deadline, and now I have to go back and re-create sheet metal parts as components rather than bodies so that I can flatten and export. Huge time waste.
Agree. This is a very annoying thing. You can't in an easy way generat a STEP-file for production. Surprised of the low amount of support this has gathered.
There is probably a good reason this does not work as other environments, but the limitations it puts on usage should it make it imo a high priority to allow us to switch body to component. Would be great it this could be fixed.
Completely agreed - I have spent hours creating a sheet metal part not at all aware of the limitation of not being able to convert it to a component. Now it is a useless body because I need to be able to export it on a format other than STL...
You can still get the STL through an odd work around. Go to "public link" and activate the public link and the downloable link check box. Copy the link to your webbowser and choose STL under the download button. Autodesk sends you a downloadlink to your email and through this link you can get the sheetmetal part (or any part or assembly) as a STL. Hope that works for you.
Eunderhill, if all you need to do is export stp, then isolate the required body and export the whole document as stp. Anything invisible will not be exported. It's tedious, but it works, good luck.
Hey, I ran into the same issue. I was able to solve it by right clicking my Sheet metal part in the browser and selecting "Convert to DM feature." I was then able to edit the sheet metal features as Bodies and Components. First time I have ever used "convert to DM feature". Took me a while to discover and I am not seeing this option available on all my parts now that I have used it once.
I can see how it may be hard to separate multiple sheet metal bodies to convert them to components, but if you only have one body because you forgot the 'New Component' first step, it would be nice to be able to convert it to a component.
