I have been using the sheet metal preview functionality for a while . And I did try some components .One thing that is missing is the individual gapsize control settings when creating multiple flanges is missing .
Have I overseen any settings for that or is it yet to be brought
Hello, I have been side tracked by other project so I haven't worked in fusion sheet metal for a couple of months. But The last time I did, the only way to create your part was by using flanges or an extruded bend profile, not by revolving, sweeping or lofting. I don't think the immediate plan is to add functionality to flatten developable surfaces created with these methods. This may have changed, but if it hasn't, I don't think you will be able to flatten a segment of a cone.
To be fair, they are both vastly more expensive products.
I am a little disappointed that sheetmetal release will be delayed a couple weeks from when it was last expected, but the preview functionality is promising, and even small improvements to that will make it fairly capable on the first official release. It should handle most of peoples needs that would typically use classic sheetmetal functionality.
Great that Fusion has Sheetmetal function at last, what's not good is that what it has is very limited.
A great deal of sheetmetal work involves Cones, Cylinders and Transformers.
As I teach students in Mechanical Engineering, the need to create and flatten sheet metal shapes is an every day occurrence. I have been using Solidworks in the past to do these.
Is there a chance that the Fusion Team could work on these in the future?
So far I am happy with what hey have provided with the preview. I have even designed some parts and manufactured them for some of my clients, which is a big step forward. I believe when it comes out of preview it will include some updates and features that was not in the preview so it is likely to get even better.
Well, overall I agree with you. I really want Fusion to be my solution, but I need to realize that at the moment it is a baby compared to the industry standard options like Inventor and Solidworks. The other thing I need to keep in perspective is the dramatically lower entry cost to using the software, and Autodesk never claiming it is ready to fully replace Inventor or Solidworks.
Cones, cylinders and methods like step breaking are typically seen in HVAC and other ducting type of sheetmetal industries. I will fully admit huge industries, but not what I would call the classical machinery oriented sheetmetal. These features took awhile to even get in major software packages as they tend to be more complex than they appear to implement well. I fully understand why for the first release Autodesk chose to focus on the core basics first.
Since sheetmetal is my main needed capability outside the core modeling tools, I am happy I can do a majority of my work with a flexible low cost tool... finally. I also do really hope they work in the HVAC tools in the near future, as it would pair well with the CAM tools for job shops and manufacturers. I also think once they have the first major step implemented, adding new tools will be overall simpler.
Sorry, just trying to keep your expectations realistic, as I also have to constantly do to myself. I really want Fusion to fully replace any need for other Mechanical 3D design tools.
Can I download a demo copy of the Preview? We're now deciding which sheet metal CAD system to buy (IronCAD, BricsCAD, Solid Works, etc.). This would be helpful in making our decision.
Don't get solidworks. - Honestly get Pro/Creo. Or wait for fusion. I use SW at work and it crashes on my daily. Pro/Creo is so much more developed. I wouldn't touch IRONCAD either.

Without knowing your application it is hard to recommend Fusion for sheetmetal needs. That being said I have been doing sheetmetal design for over 10 years, using Solidworks and Autodesk Inventor mainly, and see Fusion doing most of what I would ever need it to do. Since sheetmetal is now working in Fusion it will be my only CAD package.
Solidworks, Solidedge, Creo..... these are all major main stream packages that will have quirks of their own but ultimately will be capable. I have heard good and bad about them all. I would probably shy away from the lesser know packages like IronCAD, which I think just never really fit in well for professionals, even though I have heard of people being happy with them.
But do not forget that Autodesk has Inventor, which even though is not perfect it is just as capable as all the other packages. I have used it and I was perfectly happy with it. It has a reasonably affordable subscription as well as reasonable purchase price relative to the others. If you ever plan on moving to Fusion it would probably be the simplest transition as well.
Hi Everyone. We've been using Corel Draw for 20 years to make electronic enclosure drawings. Recently, our metal shops are demanding a CAD file (STEP, DWG, DXF, etc.) rather than a PDF, so we need to join the 1990's and get a sheet-metal CAD system. I don't think we need anything advanced, just the ability to design a sheet-metal enclosure with all the normal doo-dads (PEM nuts, PEM standoffs, flat-head screw countersinks, thru-holes, flanges, dimples, various types of cutouts, bend requirements, tolerance callouts, metal thickness callout, etc..). The sheet-metal shop must be able to import our file so they can "expand" the drawing to a single flat piece of metal with all the fabrication and bending requirements and tolerances automatically part of the drawing.
Will the new Fusion 360 package do this? How can I get an demo copy of the beta version?
I agree, I started to commit to Fusion 360 after I heard sheetmetal will be making it's way into the software, which is a must for me. That was a year ago and I was hoping to see it implemented 6 months ago. I agree with your skepticism, and we have been given plenty of reasons to feel that way. But! I have finally had my hands on the preview and cannot image a reason that we would not see it out of preview this month, even if the 8th date is missed.

What you describe is basically the core of the work I do, and what I would say is "typical" sheetmetal work. Fusion even in the Preview state would accomplish most if not all your needs. Plus you could work with your vendor and provide flat patterns directly and or collaborate using Fusion and utilize versioning without emailing files back and forth. It will definitely be more involved than what you are used to, because once you make the leap into 3D CAD there will be a learning curve. But I think at the end of the day you will like having the added capability it gives you. The one thing I would say is probably not ready is stamped features like dimples, louvers, ribs. However it would not be too hard to show center points for those features.
