Select Version and Remain Bound

I may be doing things the wrong way in my workflows, and I'm open to suggestions that improve the way I do things. I often have designs that I model, then CAM, then make on the CNC. However I also incorporate these designs in other designs as components. The issue I run into is that I want a version that represents the model as I want it to appear in other designs that use it, and another that's for CAM -with vise, fixture(s) etc for machining.

I clearly don't want a vise or other fixturing stuff to show up in a design where I've inserted this component, so I select a specific version of the component to use in the design that incorporates it. However, the design constantly thinks the incorporated component is "out of date". It's not out of date per se, it's just that it's not the newest save because the newest saved probably has a vise clamped to it.

Am I doing things wrong? If not, I suggest that once a user selects a version that the design shouldn't flag that it's not the "newest version".
