Scale dimension to size, instead of by factor

Scale dimension to size, instead of by factor

I ran into this problem, where I imported a file created in another program, and I needed to scale it to a specific dimension. For instance, the drawing was something like 2.64" tall (y-axis) and I needed it to be 4" tall. It is a complex 2d sketch, which I prefer not to recreate.

There is a scale by factor tool already, and this is currently the only option for changing the size of my sketch. I have to calculate the scale factor (4/2.64 = 1.5151) which got me to 4.001" (close enough for this drawing).

A more elgegant solution would be the option to scale the drawing right to 4" in height, and of course the width would scale proportionately. Additionally, being able to scale the width and have the height scale proportionately would also be nice.

If you are wondering, I also tried to scale this sketch by setting a dimension between the lowest Y-axis point and the highest Y-axis point, but received an error that the sketch was over-defined. If you would like to see a screenshot of the sketch in question, please refer to this thread: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/sketching-sculpting-modeling-and/scale-to-an-exact-dimension/td-p/5562...

I think we need both in fact (not instead) :

- scale by factor

AND

- scale to size

Oh I agree, though I possibly didn't explain it that way.

And, not instead.

i support this idea wholeheartedly... i'm about 30 minutes into using fusion 360 for the first time and would find it useful to have a scale object to size option for an imported file. (or any object for that matter)

I admit my learning approach isn't optimal but i'd love to see this addition.

(for the record my style is, click first, fix it, then figure out what my first click broke and how to unbreak it before i click on it next time 🙂 usually with my click first approach involved in the fix attempt... fun!)

Thank you for your idea, this is getting changed to future consideration.  While a great idea, you can create a mathematical equation based off the current size and what you would like it to be.  I know that it isn't the workflow you are looking for, but it is a solution.

To extend the idea, I'd also like to constrain the target dimension to another part.  So if I stretch a different part this sketch auto-scales to the new size.

I was supprised that this option was not in the program already... in all my programs that I use, this is just a given. PLEASE impliment this 😉

Hey mate if you need to scale to exact dimensions and keep everything in proportion to XYZ, export the model into netfabb, use the scale tool, punch in your values in either x y or z axis and done

I was surprised to discover that the Sketch Scale tool deletes dimensions such as linear, diameter, and radius, after the command completes.

This was unexpected behavior having worked with other CAD systems in which the dimensions are adjusted by the scale factor.

I hope the Sketch Scale tool will be improved in a future release version of the tool to not delete the dimensions?

For simple geometry I could dedrive the scale factor from a formula. The problem is attaching scaled geometry to other points/lines. Like say I'm placing profile curves on a guide rails for a loft: if the profile curves don't exactly intersect with the guide rails the loft will fail. If I want to explain to Fusion that these things intersect I should be able to do that and have it driven by the guide rail geometry.

Please add the option to Scale by size alongside with scale by factor.

I strongly support the implementation of a feature to scale to a given x, y or z dimension.  As stated above, it's a feature that i use frequently in other programs, and would make my life much easier in Fusion 360.

I'd love to see the scale by size feature as well, this would put you ahead of the competition as well, I have to use Solidworks at work and it doesn't have this feature either.

Yes, please this would be really really helpful!

I'm making demonstration machined parts and have flexibility in my design size. In some cases I would prefer to scale my design to fit my available stock size rather than machine more material or source another size stock. To scale to a dimension I use math to translate from dimension to scale factor. However, I am worse at math than a computer. Please computer this math for me.

I would like to see this implemented on bodies. It would help where offsets fail on complex models.

I was surprised to see that this is not already in Fusion 360, which I consider to be an enterprise grade CAD tool. So I'm a bit disappointed to be honest. Looking forward to see it being implemented. Much simpler tools such as SketchUp already has this feature.

Would be very useful to have the a feature where you could insert a picture, and then scale it according a given dimension in the drawing
