Re-ordering for User Parameters

Re-ordering for User Parameters

There has been a submitted Idea for this before, but it has been archived.
I'm using several parameters for a design and I want some major parameters at the top of my list.  It would be great if we can manually change the order of our parameters instead of a default by order of creation.  Also, being able to change the units after a parameter is created would be helpful, I forgot to set a parameter to DEG and had to recreate it because I couldn't re-select the units.

Completely agree. I often have models with 100 or more parameters. These
are all inter linked generally and dependant on each other. Not being able
to at the least alphabetically order these is a bit slack hopefully there
on the job!

I just started with Fusion 360 and am enjoying working with parametric models. The current small model I am working on has over 20 user parameters and will be 30+ when I'm finished. I guess like many I name by parameters to give context like "Bottom_Assembly_Depth" "Bottom_Assembly_Height" (actually I abbreviate). So if I add another I need to quickly locate the other items in the same context to ensure a) it's not already defined b) consistent naming.

So definitely need names ordered alphabetically. Also, allowing the Parameters dialog box to be always open would be a great help.

Thanks for a great product.

I agree with technologyN6X2N. I come from a software engineering background and params was an exciting discovery for me. As technologyN6X2N rightly says, I think people may adopt a BEM approach to naming conventions. Simply making the table alphabetically sortable would be a huge plus.

Thanks so much for an amazing tool! I’ve been struggling to get into 3d modelling until you came along...loving it 👍

I suppose that could be helpful to you guys, I would still much rather be able to decide the order for myself rather than just being able to sort alphabetically.  I use several parameters in designs, so I would like to decide what order they are in, like I mentioned in my original post, The ones that get changed the most at the top, the ones that are formulas or get changed rarely go to the bottom of the list.

F360's parametric design capabilities are so useful, but the inability to reorder parameters and organize parameters into expandable/collapsible groups holds the software back. Add these functions, and parametric design will be much more scalable (or at least efficient at scale).

i use plenty of parameters in my constructions.
i need a better solution as to do the favorite trick - since i want to use these as my REAL favorites

Literally every time I use Fusion 360 I wish I had the ability to manually sort parameters.

Indeed, as you go with a project - you find out that you need more parameters for different sections, so having the ability to sort, and nest is the most logical approach to manage parameters. It would also be useful to pop up window when clicking "delete" a parameter, like "are you sure?" because when I'm tired I'm clicking all over the place 😄

Adding my vote for at least being able to sort User Parameters alphabetically by name. The common old windows method of clicking on the header bar with Name in it to show an arrow icon and sorting up or down.

Most if not all of the additional suggestions eg custom ordering, a nesting structure etc all seem to have merit to me but we might be expecting too much of an overhaul given its been on the future list for over to 2 years already.

@Anonymous It has been asked for in one post or another since 2014.  You are right we are expecting too much.  Should the clouds part, and the almighty decent his throne and degree that this gets done (along with equation curves, and non-standard threads) it is important that the user have the ability to order as the user needs.  Rarely does one need to order alphabetically, but by function since functions usually reference previous functions.  The easiest way to do that is allow the user to grab the parameter line and drag it and place it where it makes the most sense.

I too think it would be really helpful to improve the functionality. To re-state some of the previous comments that I think would be helpful:

1) Be able to re-order user parameters

2) To be able to have groups.

3) To be able to have the parameters window open while editing sketches

  • @TopHound you can edit parameters while in a sketch.

Yes @Cbyrdtopper but unfortunately the editing window is modal. What I feel is needed is a non-modal window.

You've been able to reorder lists on the web and in windows for about 25 years. The fact that you cannot sort parameters by name in Fusion 360 is just silly. I'm sorry.

Also want to upvote making the parameters window non modal. I need to be able to see my list of parameters WHILE I am dimensioning objects. The back and forth is really painful.

Please add this feature. I am only just learning to use Fusion360 (and am enjoying it), but the inability to sort user parameters is insane.

Currently the only way to do it is build it from scratch again! (and hopefully you don't forget one, throwing everything out of wack).

Re-arranging, or even a simple sort by name would help tremendously. Re-arranging would be ideal, but sort is the next best thing, because you can solve the sorting with a naming scheme. Vote is for sorting by name. (User parameters only is my concern).

I do like the other user's recomendations of grouping them though. This would be a fantastic addition to the program.
