Precision input needed to position geometry

Precision input needed to position geometry

Fusion 360 needs to have a way to precisely position a geometric shape-  lines, rectangles, circles, blocks, etc, starting from the first point.  Currently the only way I have been able to do this is to place the object, then move it.  This is very inefficient.

Hi Bruce,

To be clear, you're looking for the ability to specify X & Y dimensions when you place the first point of a sketch object, correct?  Please take a look at the attached image which demonstrates a proposal to offer X & Y inputs when a sketch tool is active (similar to that of Autocad).  Is this what you're looking for?

Thanks,

Yes Charles, the image that you posted is what I meant.  While you're at it, I'd like to be able to insert an existing model from the data panel at a precise X-Y point in the same manner.

Thanks,

Bruce

Yep, I'd like this too. At the moment we have to either move or make tons of reference geometry

Thanks for the responses.  I agree with the requst.  I've logged FUS-15315 to track this internally.

I don't understand how the idea station process works.  Is my idea/request going to be incorporated into a future software update?

I have a similar need for entering the points on lines.  I have a mathmatically calculated XY coordinate pairs with 0.001mm resolution for an object which is 100mm long.  So, zooming in and using the grid is not a good option.  There isn't even any feedback on the current XY location of the mouse!  Is it even possible to make a sketch using XY coordinate pairs in the current software?  As far as I can tell with lines currently it gives an relative angle/distance, which makes using relative XY info a matter of pulling out the calculator and doing some trig.  This seems like a pretty fundemantal flaw

Why not have a little tool window that you can pop up that shows the current mouse location, and allows you to alter the value to a desired location?  That seems like it would be  pretty easy to implement.  You could also have a right click option to enter an XY coordinate, which would then be entered for the currently pending point.

Has this feature been implemented yet? How do I access it?

I got around the problem by creating an Excel file and importing the CSV, which was actually a lot easier than entering the points by hand.    There is a tutorial for that at https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast/c1d0d5f5-17a4-485b-86dc-5330e0cba236

Here's information on a command that was written using Fusion's API that provides this capability.

When this will be imported into fusion 360 originally ?

I am Also finding the lack of XYZ interface to be difficult to work around. It would be nice to have a line feature where you can select 2D or 3D, and enter xy or XYZ respectivly for beginning point an hit enter and move to next for subsequent points XY/XYZ there after or free hand with mouse click as soon as you move to position.

While all of the comments to date are clear about the need for direct entry of Cartesian coordinates for points and other geometry in sketch mode, my comments relate to the lack of documentation on this topic. When I searched for support documentation by entering the search term "Sketch Points" it seemed obvious that if precise location of a point were possible (which it is) and that were not a simple matter of entering numeric values (which it is not), then the documentation for this feature (Sketch Points) needs "Life" Support. NOTE... much of the documentation is DOA.

At this point, the first thing to do in the documentation is to admit that direct entry of numeric values is not possible. The second step is to identify in the documentation that there is a manual way to do it and DOCUMENT the simplest most efficient manual method possible. The third step would be to certify the command written using the API and make it an integral part of the installation of the program. And lastly, JUST DO IT! This feature request is more than 3+ years old. All users of AutoCAD are accustomed to this technique. Why is it not yet implemented, or even documented?

Yep, the lack of this functionality in particular is the specific reason why I am deciding not to use Fusion360. This has got to be one of the simplest things to add from a programming/API perspective -  I can't imagine why it wouldn't be implemented unless there's a serious mess on the backend.

There are 2 ways to do this

First is draw a line with the required number of segments/vertex. Go to modify menu and select move/copy, pick end point/vertex and enter the absolute position.

Second is go to Construct menu and in third drop down select point at coordinate and enter points.

I find it faster and easier to use the first method
