OpenSCAD Import/export

OpenSCAD Import/export

Much of the open source hardware community is developing designs in OpenSCAD.  Importing STL (when that is finally implemented) and building a model on top of that would be doable but it would make models much more reusable if Fusion 360 had a module for importing/exporting OpenSCAD files directly.

I would like to add my vote for this feature. The ability to import / export between Fusion 360 and OpenScad would be absolutely awesome.

PLEASE make this a thing!!!

This is definitely a needed thing, so many items are being made in .SCAD file types and using OpenScad is painful when you are use to using a decent CAD program like Fusion360.  Even if Autodesk can provide an easy to use external app to do the conversion (or recommend one) this would also be fine, not ideal but better than using the multitude of suggestions out there that only work for a few weeks before something is changed and won't open and convert the files anymore.

Uploading a mesh file into Fusion360 takes to long to fix in order to be able to start to make changes due to the fact it just converts the STL triangles into Fusion triangles,. If it could only turn things into actual solid faces for the most part (like recognizing flat surfaces and circles) this would suffice but at present the inability to take up .SCAD files or make meaningful conversions of .STL files is a real letdown for fusion360.

Very essential feature!

On a different note:

OpenScad offers export to DXF, but it doesn't work on my machine.

Anyone having the same issues? And a solution?

Cheers!

+1 Please look into this more, as 3D printing grows more are using scad files.

My two cents here.

OpenSCAN already supports import of STL

https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual/STL_Import_and_Export

And I'm using this feature the other way around, means, rather than importing in Fusion 360 one OpenSCAD file I'm exporting STL from Fusion360 and assembling the pieces together in an OpenSCAD script.

+1 Here as well...

I would love to see this happen, as OpenSCAD is the only thing that might pull me away from Fusion360. I would want to see Fusion be able to perform operations on SCAD models and rearrange the SCAD's code accordingly, and also be able to convert to and from SCADs and Fusion bodies. I can mentally map out how this would work, but it would be a decent amount of writing code and debugging. I don't expect to see it anytime soon, but I would love to hear that it's being worked on.

Hi there,

I'm a newbie to 3D printing.

We've been training library patrons at our public library (for free) to print .stl files and it's been working well.

I have a .scad file I need to convert into .stl.

I was informed Fusion can do that but apparently we do not qualify for a free educational license, we would have to get a free hobby license but that would not enable us to convert from .scad to .stl.

I tried another free site for conversion but that did not work.

Is there another free site besides Fusion and OpenCad to convert this .scad file?

Thank you.

OpenSCAD can export those to STLs and it's open-source too!

Try the openjscad web interface

I was reading posts that OpenSCAD was not easy to use.

Have you used it to convert .scad to .stl?

Thanks.

That looks so intriguing!

Do you just drag your .stl file up to that home page and drop and then
click Convert?

Thank you.

It's super easy to convert the file, you just open the scad and under the
file menu, save it as an stl. OpenSCAD can be hard to use for modeling
depending on how you think.

Just download openscad, open your scad file, compile the file (press f6)
and save result as stl.

OK, so this thread isn't the best place to talk about using OpenSCAD (because it's for requesting SCAD support in Fusion) but for lucian.depold and anyone stumbling upon this thread... here:

To convert

.scad

to

.stl

Download OpenSCAD and open the file.

open.jpg

The program will look like this:

scad.jpg

Then under File > Export > Export as STL

export.jpg

Total newbie.

Do I fist download it here - http://www.openscad.org?

Then, install , then open and then click file menu?

Thanks.
