Improving Drawing Function

Sorry if this just seems like a bit of a whinge, but I'm not sure where to suggest this other than here. I absolutely love F360. I think Autodesk is sitting on a genuine potential game changer here, and the team behind it are absolutely first class. However at the moment it is only a potential game changer, and I think will remain so until some very serious flaws are seriously looked at.

 

I'd like the team to really have a good look and overhaul of the drawing function. As it is, if I were a commercial shop, this in itself would be a deal-breaker in terms of switching from Solidworks to F360. I sometime spend more time trying to output a workable drawing of even the most simple object, than I do modelling it in the first place!

 

It's hard to enumerate all the flaws, beyond attaching a general "hopeless" tag to this function. However as that probably isn't much help, I'll start by saying that even on new Macs, the drawing is glacially slow. To the point where it's really ridiculous how long it takes to start a new drawing from a project. Picking up dimensions is like a lotto ticket, and on some features it seems little more than luck as to whether it will pick up what it says it's going to. It won't pick up modelled threads correctly at all. Changing a dimension to something other than it's picked up seems either completely counter-intuitive or can't be done (in other words I've never figured out how to do it), so you're forced to run with the garbage it produces. The process of dimensioning hole centres is clumsy and difficult. So it goes on. Once I do finally get something up, how do I send it to the printer? Export as a pdf and print from that? Seriously? I've never seen another app that doesn't include a direct to printer option!

 

I get the impression that Autodesk really has no interest in this function and is putting all the eggs in the 3D printing basket. It's great to see a company so proactive in that area, especially since I will typically send models to my 3D printer. However I think the team is getting a little aghead of itself there. I don't need to have a single-click 3D printing solution, that's a refinement that can come later in the project's life. What I want for now is to be able to have a workable document in my hand as to what I'm going to make; I'm more than happy with the few steps to send files to my slicer/printer. At at this point in time creating drawings is so clumsy and unworkable, that they are typically more trouble than they're worth.

One thing that really strikes me about it (aside from just the long startup) is that there are a handful of standard views and layouts for engineering drawings and it'd be incredibly convinent and useful to have a few of those in the toolbox so the user can just

 

1) select a part or assembly 

2) select a layout and view(s) 

 

and have the drawing(s) auto generated with automatic scaling.

 

Doing everything manually over and over gets old fast

Absolutely Scott. I was literally shocked to see that the drawings were not auto-generated and auto-dimensioned. If I've taken the time to specify a dimension on a feature in the model, I think it's probably not unrealistic that I'm going to want to know that dimension when it comes time to make it!

 

To put this in perspective as to just how bad this part of the app is, the part I was modelling in this case was a very simple and small shaft as part of a dial indicator holder. It, LITERALLY, took me less time to turn the part on the lathe with the various shoulders and features, thread it M5, part it off and cross-drill it, than it took to get a working dimensioned drawing out of F360. Now in fairness one could argue that I don't endure this part of the app more than I absolutely have to, so I'm not as fast with it. I also needed to discover that, no, it won't dimension a modelled thread (I normally model them as they will generally feature in 3D prints). I then discovered, twice, that I'd missed a required dimension so needed to come back to the computer and insert the required information (since it wasn't auto-generated). However much of the time was spent trying to get the required dimensions in the drawing instead of some obscure ones it decided it would insert.

 

This part of the app really isn't up to the standard of the rest of the application, not by a mile.

That'd only be a downer if things couldn't be improved / fixed. All you're doing is trying to nudge something that's almost game changing to realize its potential.

 

Per Carl, it's «misbehaving» here by being critical of F360 - but the only reason I'm still here and continuing to use the app is that for all its flaws, it's actually better than anything else I've tried. I love it and want it to be better. My impression here is that drawings were made more to look cool for marketing than to actually be useful for end-users. Putting the marketing cart before the functionality horse seems to be par for the course and it's really hurting the product.

 

Drawings are a huge deal if you're getting parts manufactured, machining them yourself, or if you can't afford to pay a draftsman to make figures for design/utility patents.

 

The most frustrating thing here is that years ago / before they were even in beta, I spent a few hours talking with the drawings team about what should be baked in there and auto-layout, auto-scale, and auto-dimensioning were all things that I stressed need to be in there.

 

Preset layouts seem like something that could be roughed out in an afternoon with a solid implementation in a week. Ditto auto-scaling.

 

 

Auto-dimensioning would be incredibly useful, but it's also probably pretty hard (though not impossible) to do well. Really all that needs to be built to make that work is (a) identify key dimensions for all visible features (b) use a standard graph layout optimization technique to place the dimensions such that they're not overlapping eachother.

I know it is farfetch, I know most shops are not there yet as well as most companies  but:  why 2D?  why drawings?  information is ALL in the 3D model.  Spec sheet could be used attached in the cloud.  We have here a game changing approach to CAD.  If someone wants to know what is the dimension, he can interogate the 3D model with free viewers and specs sheets as web sites...   Again, I know I'm ridiculous.  Why don't we all start working in 3D from the designer to the machinist?  It is only ideas thrown in the CAD universe... Sorry to polute the comment!...  No offense intended.

Because the information is NOT on the 3D model, it is contained within the model. Another machine can understand that, hence CAM, but a human cannot. That is why we need a 2D interpretation of the model, properly dimensioned in order for a human to be able to either make or check the part. I'm begrudgingly persisting with the drawing function, but it's taking so much time to use, and produces so many errors, that I'm seriously considering seeing of I can export to another CAD program to print the results of the modelling.

Hi @Anonymous, thanks for the candid feedback, we appreciate it. I'm archiving this because of the lack of a singluar "idea" proposal, which is what the IdeaStation is designed for. If you're interested in starting a discussion around the Drawings feature of Fusion 360, there's a lot of engagement on the Forum. To that end though, I want to assure you that we are investing heavily in the Drawings functionality, and we are taking it very seriously. We have come a long way in providing drawing functionality natively for both Mac and PC over this past year, and we are working hard at continuing to add to the feature set with every Fusion 360 release. If you have specific items that you'd like to see implemented, please post them here to the IdeaStation individually so that we can best track them and communicate back to you their status'.

Hello,

Since i discovered A360 Fusion, i'm just really excited to work with it. It has many functions that i like that were previously in different 3D tools (Cubify Design & Blender)

 

Some improvment that could help into the sketch work.

Add assistant when drawing a line that is parrallel to an other line to match where the starting point starts (like in Cubify Design)

Add constructions lines that help to do sketches (like in Cubify Design)
