Fusion 360 needs a CV curve for designers - seriously!

Fusion 360 needs a CV curve for designers - seriously!

Just a reminder to an old suggestion that Fusion 360 sketch really needs a CV curve so designers have better control

over the curves they create.

Splines are great as two point curves to create G1 or G2 blend curves but for sculpting smooth profiles it is a less

effective and efficient tool.

What is a click click done in Alias or Rhino is a painful adjust here adjust there adjust here adjust there and it still does not low well.

Here is a screencast showing how different the two curve tools work:

In Fusion 360 the splines are really great to be used as blend curves but for sculpting as shown in the video they are really hard to manage.

@Anonymous as someone who fancies themselves somewhere between an engineer and designer, what I want more than anything is the ability to generate precise curves with specific properties that satisfy engineering and aesthetic constraints.

This is an old project but I'm still annoyed to this day that in order to get precise boundaries and something close to the aesthetics we wanted, we ended up with this awful crease in a molded part

I want the tools to make the geometry that I want without having to compromise either in design or functionality and without having to resort to imprecise hand sculpting

That is why I use Alias to resolve those kinds of problems.

There are many ways to hit exact dimensions. Parametric modeling is only one of those ways and it's value has limits as you have found.

I design products that people trust their lives to and we have no tolerance for poor engineering nor poor form execution. Because of that we have to be flexible in our methods. Assuming a "correct" way almost always leads us to dead ends on both the engineering and design side.

To be honest that's one of the potential strengths of Fusion. I've hit extremely tight tolerances even using Tsplines. I have a product hitting the market soon that was done this way- a product that's certified as PPE.  While I am an expert in form execution, I'm only an intermediate Tspline manipulator at best. The tools are there if you have patience to figure out how to make them work for you.

While I  wouldn't do that product the same way again, I found a great deal of value in figuring out how to do it.

The bottom line for me though? The reason I did it with Tsplines in the first place was as a work around for the lack of decent curves.

Yeah agreed about it being a potential strength and I’m on record from probably 2013 or so saying how great it is that it could be a one stop shop for design and engineering

It’s frustrating to see that potential still unfulfilled

@anton.kuptsovEJSSW,

True point about this idea being out for a while now, the good news it that CV Splines are currently under development.  When I have something to share or more on timing I will follow up.  Based on customer feedback, the team has spent the last year focused on constraint solve and dragging behaviors.  I am quite proud of the progress the team has made, knowing that we still have work to be done.  The improvements to loft and sweep features come from the balance that Colin (PM for Fusion with a background on the Alias team) and I have, along with our desire to have a complete design to manufacture workflow.

Cheers,

alias Speedform have had CV from the beginning, same engine correct.. Maybe you can just call them.. will be able to tell you how to do it !

A sneak peek at what we currently have in our dev builds. Testing this now. ETA on drop tbd.

Too bad one can't leave a Kudos/Like on posts in the idea station.

@keqingsong Please add this to "Preview". 100/100 from me.

@keqingsong You are such a tease .... great to see this being materialized

this will be epic when making more complex curves / blends

Releas it now... it's only 3 years since you promist it to be released.  crazy developing time !!

@Anonymous Well there were / are reasons for it

Please add CV curve feature. I can't draw a single curve without this feature. thank you very much.

Hey all - this is Lucas from the Product Management team. To piggyback off Keqing's comment, Control Point Splines have been in the product for 3 months now and I'd love to get feedback from any of you who have been utilizing the feature since release. I'd love any feedback at all, but here's a few questions to get your juices flowing:

  • What are your overall thoughts on Control Point Splines?
  • How has your experience been adding constraints and/or dimensions to the curves/control frame?
  • Do you have any example files you'd be willing to share with our team that showcase how you've used CV Splines?
  • What is the next piece of functionality you want with regards to Control Point Splines?

To prevent 100+ people from getting notified with every piece of feedback, please send me an email at lucas.prokopiak@autodesk.com with your thoughts rather than commenting on this thread.

Thanks!
