In "Render" Mode when you try to set a focus point of depth of focus the point can normally be set to any visible surface. When there is an active "Cutting Plane" Analysis in "Model" Mode, the stuff hidden there cannot be selected as a focus point, even thus the surface is visible in "Render" Mode.
