Error: component behaving as read-only, refuses to boolean or tweak

- made subassemblies

- made master assembly

- realized I needed to cut a hole in one part

- created a cube with plane on one side of the target body

- when i extrude, error says "no target body found to cut or intersect!"

- i extrude as new body

- i manually attempt to boolean shapes.  cannot click on target body.  Apparently I can't click on ANY component bodies, they're off limits.

What am I doing wrong here?  In other projects I built the bodies from the ground up in a single file and they could be boolean'd.
