Close File After Post

Fusion360 has a clean and consistent user interface but there is one area that could use some cleanup.

I normally post to a USB stick and bring the stick to my cnc machine.

After posting, Fusion360 leaves some files open on the stick. When I try to eject I get the attached warning (“after post”).  Fusion360 does not close this file until after you completely leave Fusion360.

Once you completely quit Fusion360, windows is happy (see “only if exit fusion”).

Suggestion: After post, close all resources used on the post to allow the detachable USB stick to be ejected without warnings.

I don't have this problem, I use several different posts for different machine and I've never seen this problem. What post are you using, also are you using the brackets editor and are you closing it before trying to remove the disk.

I am having the same 'problem' : I  post my .nc files to a USB stick, to take it to the workshop where my CNC is.

When I want to 'safe remove' the USB stick, Windows says it can't because it is still in use.

It can only be safely removed after closing Fusion360.

I am working on Windows 10. I usually have the file opened in Brackets editor (after posting), but then close the editor once I verified everything looks good. So the cause is not the Brackets Editor. I am using a custom Post-Processor, but I don't see how the JavaScript from the Post-Processor could close the file after writing it.. I

I usually unplug the USB-stick without safe removal, and so far this hasn't resulted in any problems... 

A bit more about why I work this way :

* I run Fusion360 on a laptop, upstairs in my 'design environment'

* I run the gCode from Universal GCode Sender, on an old laptop next to my CNC. The CNC is downstairs in a workshop with more dust, dirt, etc. There is no network to connect both machines. I don't like to take the Fusion360 machine into the Workshop...

* When designing stuff, I often iterate : design in Fusion, Post .NC-file, Run the job on the CNC, evaluate, measure, etc then adjust the design and start over again

In this setup a network between both machines would be ideal, however it is not easy to do in my building. USB-stick is the next best alternative.

I've noticed this now I'm using Windows 8.1, Win 7 seemed fine. One thing to try is go to "This PC" in file manager and right click the drive and select Eject. There is a bit of a problem where some drives are not recognised as removeable by Win 8 & 10, I found a program "lexar usb tool" that has an option to flip the removable setting on the drive I use.

Edit you do still get this warning but clicking continue has allowed me to remove the drive without any problems.

I can confirm this also works on Win10.

Still it indicates some files are open, that could maybe be improved in a future update.

Unfortunately this idea did not get the support of the community and as such we will not be pursuing it. Please feel free to rework and resubmit this one down the road. Thanks for taking the time to submit your idea.

It's unfortunate that the community has decided to drop this issue. It is a problem that I experience also. It is very important as I have made posts to the USB and unable to eject so I just pulled tha card and inserted into cnc. Luckily I checked the program first because it did not update the USB. I think this is a critical issue that could possibly realty in machine damage and or injury. Hopefully Autodesk will take this more seriously.
