I get a lot of questions on my instructables classes about errors like this one from the Shell command:
"The selected faces could not be offset. Try adjusting the offset/thickness value or changing the selection of faces."
The answer is simple, but a lot of users are confused by errors like this. The Fillet, Chamfer, and Offset commands often have the same error when the default value is too large for the geometry to resolve.
Would it be possible to automatically set the value in these commands to something that's possible to resolve? If this were the case, users would be more likely to understand failures as they change the values.
