Allow axis as mirror line in sketches

Allow axis as mirror line in sketches

When mirroring sketch components, a line must be drawn as the mirror line, even if its directly over one of the origin axes.  This is a waste of time, and clutters the sketch needlessly.

It should be possible to select one of the origin axes as the mirror line.

I wondered about this lack of common sense too many times.

I totally agree, its there...why not using it?

BRO YOUR IDEA IS ALREADY THERE IN FUSION JUST GO TO CREATE AND USE THE MIRROR COMMAND.

When mirroring sketch components, a line must be drawn as the mirror line

I am pretty new to F360 myself, but when I mirror features in my designs, I select the origin-base plane in the browser list down the lefthand side of the window.   (Like if I want the same feature on left and right sides of the origin I pick the XZ plane).   If you're mirroring sketch lines, you can't select the axis the same way?

You mean mirror about plane ? Yes, much needed.

You can't choose the origin axis to peform a mirror action but you can choose the origin PLANES to create a mirror action in the modeling environment.

Why you would need to choose the axis of the origin to create a mirror action is somewhat of a mystery to me. The origin axis are rarely to be positioned where it is required in the first place. Yet, as I said you can select the origin plane instead which is essentially the same thing as selecting the origin axis if it were possible.

This would be a useful feature. When one needs to create a mirror of components, bodies or features the origin planes can be used. When using Revolve , any one of the origin axis can be selected. But when in Sketch Mode, for those times when elements are symmetric about the origin axis, it would be advantageous to be able to select an origin axis for sketch mirroring rather taking extra time to draw them.

@Anonymous  that's what I was referring to myself, that I do use the origin planes when mirroring a feature.  But I get the OP's question - when you're in a sketch, if you're looking to mirror something across the origin, why should you have to draw a new mirror line on an axis when you could just pick the axis itself?    That's kind of an odd thing to have to do.

Doesn't the origin stay the same size whether you zoom in or zoom out? If
yes, then this might describe why the axis isn't available as a mirror line
because it's not locked to the grid. Or is it.

Hello All,

We have added the enhancement in the sketch in March release, where you will be able to select the World Axes (any axis or any other line in other sketches as well) as mirror line.

Please give it a try and let us know if you have any queries.

Thank you,

Best Regards

@rohit.bapat   Thank you! I saw the announcement yesterday on YT. Waiting for my Fusion to update here on my machine.

Great to see that you understood the problem and fixed it.

@rohit.bapat I was excited to hear about the update! However, unfortunately it still doesn't seem to work? When you're sketching, you still can't select a world axis as a mirror. This really would be useful so you don't have to clutter up the sketch with an extra line of arbitrary (meaningless) length.

Hello @edgemarston

Thank you posting the query. Can you please post a video? It will help us understand the problem.

I am assuming you are looking at the sketch in 3D view

Case 1 (Looking at the sketch from top)

Case 2 (Looking at the sketch in 3D view ie not from top)

Please let me know if I misunderstood the issue.

Thank you,

Best Regards

Hi @rohit.bapat, I see what I was doing wrong. I tried it again, and I was able to get the mirroring to work by using the origin planes of the active component. I had been trying to use the base-level origin instead, which can't be selected. Thank you for the quick reply and the videos!

same with me here...only works in certain ways, but not very consistent.

I have a hard time to wrap  my head around this one,,,
