[OPEN] Tell us about your experience with USDz

We need your feedback on the new USDz functionality in Fusion 360.

Note on limitations:

    1. Apple supports only ASCII characters for USDz file names. Unicode characters (Chinese characters, vowels with accents, etc.) will cause an error.
    2. Apple does not support exporting Decals, Canvases, and procedural textures. Any 3D textures such as wood grain and textures with complex bump maps will export as the default material.

What we need from you:

    • Have you experienced any errors exporting from Fusion or importing on and Apple device?
    • Can anyone send us examples of models which do not load /export properly?
    • Have you had trouble connecting the iCloud service to Fusion?

All questions, comments, and criticisms are welcome.

Thanks,

Harv.

Not what you need, but I'm very excited to see this file format support. Nice work y'all! Our team is excited to use this. Will update if anything strange happens. I tried a importing a png as a texture map on a revolved spline surface and it definitely didn't quite look as expected, but maybe that's normal? I had just replaced the texture image of the Wood > Pine appearance. The default wood appearances look fine. Maybe adding a base material for this purpose? If there is one I'm just struggling to find the right one to use for this purpose.

Hello,

with my fisrt try I get a little disappointed as at my first export I get some artefacts:

So that's why I was wondering if we can get a preview window with options to edit/adjust the tesselation. Something like "Make 3D Print" and the preview of the mesh before export to STL.

I aws also wondering if we should get this option in Fusion Team as downlaodable file format, and if it will work on iOS version of Fusion.

As told in a previous forum message, an export in GLB could be also valuable for Win/Android platforms...

it's a really cool format that my team and I are already using.
unfortunately there is the big limitation of the Apple platform alone, our customers with Android are not able to evaluate our projects.
it would be really interesting to use the AR function directly from the Fusion360 app of the mobile device

Hi Jean-Michel -

It would really help Harv and the PMs if you can share the files where you see this kind of behavior. It helps them to be able to understand why such issues happen.

I use an Educational License for Fusin 360. And I exported the .usdz file but could not open it as I could not find a Good App that supported this file type, and was free.. Can anyone suggest an App... (Free and for windows)

Thanks and Regards,

Rushabh Thakkar.

If you have a full Creative Cloud subscription from Adobe, Dimension will be able to open it.

Oups Sorry,

I was wrong for this one, unfortunately, Aero is able to generate USDZ, but not open them.

I agree with d.bandiera. I've had a great experience with USDz so far, but it's frustrating that I can only generate them from the desktop application. It would be a lot more convenient if we could view them directly from the mobile app, or at least export to USDz from the iOS app so I can view a model in AR to show a customer or colleague (or send it to them to view on their device) even if I only have access to my phone at the time.

Obviously the second option wouldn't solve the issue of being limited to iOS, but it would be a nice feature to have in the meantime, assuming native viewing in the app would have a long development time.

This is a great addition.

It would be helpful to understand the limitations around appearances.  We get the following error with all of our models that use custom appearances, even very simple ones with minimal / no texture: "Warning: The design contains the following unsupported appearances:
Generic
XX

YY

Unsupported appearances will be replaced with the appearance: Steel Satin."

Are there modifications we can make to our appearances to make them compliant?  Having an understanding of the limitation would be useful so we can find reasonable workarounds, without having to resort to completely non-representative appearances.

All in all, great addition and looking forward to its continued improvement!

It was nice to see AR support, but then  i saw it was only UDSz export that is supported,...

85% of the laptops/ pc's sold worldwide runs windows, 75% of the mobile devices runs on android,...  Where is the .GLB export?

If you believe USDz is a file format that deserves promoting over .glb, why isn't USDz at least supported in the fusion 360 android app ? Without GLB and without at least the support in the android  it feels as if you are giving a big f*** you to the Android and windows users,...

I attempted to view the USDZ exported files using both the native iOS app and the AR Viewer app but with no success.  In both cases I receive errors.  For the native iOS app I receive the following error, "Object requires a newer version of iOS".  I updated to the latest version of iOS and get the same error.  The AR Viewer gives me the following error, "Problem Found: The origin of the model deviates greatly from the recommended position (centered under the model).  The positioning may therefore appear incorrect."  The origin of my model within Fusion is directly below the object and on the CL.  Any thoughts on how to get this working?

Hi R. Huff -

I know it might be a bit frustrating....but I don't think we've seen this kind of behavior generally....could you share the file that you are having trouble with? Perhaps we could see what's causing the issue.

Also - is it just one file? It sounds like you are seeing this on multiple files.

And - if multiple files show the problem - is there something about them? Have you tried exporting a simple block with no special applied materials or textures?

I'm just trying to get to the bottom of what is causing the issue.

Thanks for reaching out!  Unfortunately I can't shared the actual file as it is confidential.  I can try the simple block approach and then move up to removing textures.

@mickey.wakefield I tried exporting a simple 1" x 1" x 1" block with no color or texture and received the same errors in both the native iOS app and the AR Viewer.

I have also tried using the SimLab USDZ Exporter plug-in with no success.

Textures will almost surely cause a problem because (last I heard) the USDz format does not support them. (this is a problem with the file type, not Fusion's export.)

Hrmm - that is odd....
I can do it. No issues.
Could you share your simple block here so I can try yours? I know it seems silly - but I'm trying to determine if the problem is with Fusion - or with your machine - or if it has to do with your phone. (You are tying to put it into a phone, right?)
