[CLOSED] Feedback on upcoming Text

Hello Experts,

I am working on modernising Text in Fusion and also introducing Text on Path.

Existing & planned UI details -

Screenshot 2020-05-20 at 2.42.57 PM.png

Text creation workflow would be as follows -

Create a text frame > Enter the text string > Set any additional styling & alignment options > Commit

Screenshot 2020-05-20 at 2.43.49 PM.png

Screenshot 2020-05-20 at 2.44.54 PM.png

Would love to hear your feedback on below points -

1. Overall, what is your first impression of this ?

2. Do you feel the need of precise move options for text frame while creating text ?
3. Manipulators shown here are enough (free move, rotate, scale) at the step of text creation step ?
4. The label Spacing is easy to understand for the purpose it is designed ?

I will share similar details on text on path in a separate post.

Thanks for your time !

Regards,

Anand

Sorry,

I've posted my request before seeing your comment about parametric text.

no worries - the more folks asking for parametric text, the better the odds we'll see it at some point.

Great feedback!  I hope text on curves can be done.. it makes infinite sense.  Many many 3d parts have curves to them. We don't have a lot of room on many smaller parts to write legible, neat text.  Aligning letters with curves automatically seems long overdue, and a slam dunk in terms of making it user friendly.  Thank you for working on this AutoDesk!!!

Parametric and the ability to create patterns of text.

I recently designed a part with ~30 numbered posistions. Instead of having to create 30 text-elements, realize that the font made everything past 11 look ugly and have to edit all off them, it should been useful to just edit  the first element and have the rest  automagicly update

I would like to see the API functions getting all the updates.

Also fixes on existing bugs, such as:

Will there be any beta that add-in developers can use to test their add-ins with the new text tool?

Hello,

I appreciate the text dialog box in the last (19Oct20) update.

and also I appreciate the text on curve feature.

Nevertheless, one option is missing for me, I mean "kerning" or something to edit the space between chars.

Between normal text and text extended to the length of the path you may want some fine tuning.

Many Thanks

Thanks so much @anandjoshi , this is sorely needed! My answers to your questions are below:

1. Overall, what is your first impression of this ?

I'm very excited about this, as the text function in Fusion is currently one of it's weakest points and very much needs to be improved.

2. Do you feel the need of precise move options for text frame while creating text ?

Yes, because the user might need to adjust the content of the text while they are adjusting the size as the two could very well be interdependent.
3. Manipulators shown here are enough (free move, rotate, scale) at the step of text creation step ?

I would rather just have all of the manipulation options available from the start. The behavior of the text box would then be consistent which helps reduce user confusion. It would always have the same options and always react the same way to user input whether you are just creating the text or modifying it later.
4. The label Spacing is easy to understand for the purpose it is designed ?

Yes but I might call it "Spacing/Kerning" for people who are coming from the world of typography.

Besides that, I have a few points I would love for the new Text function to have:

1. The text box should snugly fit around the actual size and shape of the letters and update if the font or size is changed (it seems like this is already planned)

2. Font, font size, text content, and text formatting (bold, italic, etc.) should be added as selectable "units" for parameters so someone can create a font, font size, text content, or text formatting parameter and use that to control text boxes within the design. This way a user could parametrically update many different text boxes from the parameters menu. As it stands, there is no way for a user to change the font, font size, text content, or formatting of multiple text boxes from one place. This means for a design that has many text boxes in different sketches (like a D20 dice for example), the user has to go edit every individual sketch and the text box within them which is very time consuming.

3. Allow for the ability to quickly scroll through different fonts using either the mouse scroll wheel or arrow keys, and update the text in real time. That way the user can quickly try out different fonts and choose the best one. As it stands currently, the user has to click on the font drop down menu, scroll to a font, then click again to select it before the text is updated. This makes choosing a font very time consuming. (The scroll wheel already scrolls through fonts but it doesn't actually do anything, and the user still has to click on the font to make it update the text)

4. Make a center point handle for the text box automatically when created, the way it does with the polygon tool so users can constrain the text box by the center

5. Make it possible to pattern text boxes with the circular pattern or rectangular pattern functions. (Being able to pattern sketches would also be awesome but that is another subject)

Thank you again, and I hope you find this input helpful.
-Sam

I would like the possibility to offset a texts outline. As it is now I have to explode the text and then edit the outline. But this limits the text editing options after this is done.

Thanx!

Tom

But kerning is only the spacing between the letters. Offset is the "boldness" of each letter. It's not the same.

Yes, this - and also make it possible to use all fonts. There are many fonts that I have that would work very well in my designs, but when I select them, I get some sort of generic sans-serif font that is not what I wanted. It seems like some types of fonts (I don't know the details and haven't investigated) don't translate into usable text in Fusion so are replaced by a generic font. The same font can be used in an SVG in Inkscape, so it seems like Fusion is missing something there.

I rarely use text command, but when I used it in my last design I found some issues that need to be fixed.

Issue 1:
I typed a single word from Sketch --> Text command.
Now I'm trying to do simple operations like extrude on this text, but Fusion 360 shows me an error saying, "Tool body creation failed."
Also tried embossing but No use, I tried extruding the same word in a separate file too, But I got the same error message.
I observed one more thing, It's not working because of the font I selected. It's working with other fonts.
But I don't have an option, I need embossing in the font I selected or similar.
(Font: Hiragino Sans)

Issue 2:

In the same design, I just want the text to appear on the surface like a decal or print, it is convenient to type words instead of finding images for decals.
But to create such a thing I needed to cut material from the surface with a thickness of 0.000001, which is illogical, can we have an embossing feature with zero thickness?

Issue 3:
I was creating a 3D model of an old Indian rupee coin, for that, I need text to follow a circular path, I think this issue is accounted in this new feature text on path.

It works great! It would be really helpful if the settings (font size, alignment, etc) were sticky. See this tutorial I made to see why it would be a time saver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO7v7U1eJbs

1. Overall, what is your first impression of this ?

It looks fine, but it is only a static image, not a working draft; actual results may not match expectations/assumptions, always a worry.

2. Do you feel the need of precise move options for text frame while creating text ?

I would say Yes only because the recent Text update gives you no option to do decent placement, it always requires a re-edit.
3. Manipulators shown here are enough (free move, rotate, scale) at the step of text creation step ?

Yes
4. The label Spacing is easy to understand for the purpose it is designed ?

No, it says it is a percentage; what is it a percentage of? If I space at 100%, where is 100% exactly?

PLEASE NOTE! An absolute "must" for me is to stop the text dialog defaulting to "Arial, 10mm, etc". I've been doing work that requires me to enter multiples texts in spot locations, and EVERY TIME I need to look up the font I need, reset the size.... Just make it remember the last settings used, or even better allow some templates.

Also, it seems that "Explode Text" has been improved recently, so please try not to break it again (I don't think that likely since it is a post-processing operation, but "just saying").

Good luck!

A quick note about selecting font, when you click in the dropdown type the first two or three letters of the name (quickly!) to locate yourself on or close to the target font.

Yes - this so much! If I had a dollar for each time Arial 10mm was exactly the font I needed, I would still have no  money. I'd be perfectly okay with it defaulting to that if it would remember when I changed it. Right now if I place 6 texts, I have to change the font and size each time. Or give us the option to set a default and have it remember the last font/size/alignment.

Text is getting far better than it was, (I'm downright giddy we can finally center alight text!) but there are still potential areas for improvement. If we got the above addressed and then had the ability to call a parameter (include a dimension value in the text) I would be dizzy with glee. Totally not joking, that would absolutely rock.

I like the text around curve. It lets me move away from having to do text in another modeler.  One request.

If I need to do a multi line text on curve. Can you have it as an option to space the text to the next selected offset value?  Right now I'm offsetting the curve then placing the second row of text. It would be helpful if I was able to have one text box and the return offsetting to another line.

I'm not sure if it's in-scope with this effort, but having editable text as extrudable geometry would be good. If I have to edit text that I'm engraving, I have to blow the old text away and re create it from scratch.
